I can't remember why I rated this 78, as I fell asleep during it. However, it seemed to start with an effective noir atmosphere, and an interesting character, and although the story took some unusual directions, there seemed to be an extra level of complexity revealed at the end. I should probably watch it again to see if it was really that good.

the cast is fine and there are definitely some noteworthy moments here. however i was expecting a bit more...."something missing?" but this still rates as a better than average gumshoe tale.....

"The film's second half appears primed to tread some interesting existential territory, but Buschel seems confused about what direction he means to take his material." - Andrew Schenker

While not exactly very good, this is worth checking out for noir afficionados as well as fans of Shannon.

"Oh, look! We've taken an old-timey noir plot and mixed in modern elements like smoking bans, phone-cams, segways and 9/11! That's what makes it NEO-noir! Get it?"

A low-pitched detective mystery that does a good job sneaking up on you as a classic-style noir of the '40s dealing with stuff that could not have been dealt with in the '40s. Even though its writer-director isn't gifted enough to keep it from being derivative to a point of genre-conscious detachment, he still managed to make a post-9/11 '40s film. Neat trick.

I got about 15 minutes in and bailed. The movie was too cheap to even get a soundtrack!

A noir movie that will satisfy both lover's genre and mystery's lover, among the latter I include myself, even if this is not that deep.

I came into it because of Michael Shannon. The dull pace had me losing interest halfway through. I wanted so much more out of the journey and ending.

Probably the most a film not actually written or directed by Paul Auster has ever felt like a Paul Auster adaptation.
