Wasted potential. Not sure why this was set in 1993, as it didn't add anything. There's nothing really bad about this film, but I kept wanting it to be more. Moretz does a great job, but her character just continues to be a silent outsider which can be maddening at times.

The story was troubling. But, it was sad and tedious to be exposed to the daily activity of an ultra-right Christian clinic teaching gender re-orientation. The predictable ending couldn't come quick enough for me. Some of the flashbacks were confusing. This movie's main fault is the uncomfortable subject matter. Otherwise, the acting was fairly good, and Chloe Grace Moretz at least made it tolerable. Worth watching but not very enjoyable.

There's definitely a story here, but it's not told in an interesting, realistic, or enthralling way. It plays like a shitty Lifetime movie, full of cliche writing and melodrama. I known religious extremists like this, and they are just as unbearable as they are in this film, yet somehow the antagonists here just aren't believable. I get Akhavan's intention to demonize them, but she goes too far by erasing the humanness of her characters, which is patronizing and overly-preachy. Moretz is great!

I agree 100 % with this quote from David Ehrlich (Indiewire): "... a small movie, far too modest and knowing to surrender to melodrama and apply cosmetic fixes to deep wounds (the film's one big speech is its least convincing scene), but it beautifully articulates the need for young people to realize the validity of who they are, and even more beautifully crystalizes the moment when that starts to happen."

A good looking film that's undercooked by it's script. Part of me couldn't decide if I was invested in Moretz' character or not. Although an interesting and important scenario, I just seemed to be yearning for more from this.

Thoughtful and well-shot; the pace lags throughout but the characters are gripping.

There's definitely heart here and as usual Moretz does a good job embodying the character. It's enjoyable the entire time but there wasn't a moment, a character, a scene, dialogue or anything that really stuck out and elevated it beyond being merely a very good movie. Which is by no means a bad thing, but in the ever growing coming-of-age genre it doesn't bring a lot to the table and could have done more with its premise.

This isn't a bad movie, but it's one that I found particularly underwhelming. Tedious in many parts and not enough to say in others. Moretz made it worth finishing, but I wish it grabbed me more. It felt somewhat half baked. 5.3

Heartbreaking but not without some sense of hope. Educational for those of us fortunate enough to never have stepped foot in one of these facilities.

It's a small movie and a very well-made one for that matter. The cast is excellent as are the photography and music, whereas the weighty subject matter results in several funny as well as uncomfortable moments. But what the film stands out for is the simple, unpretentious way it presents its multidimensional characters. Everything is on point throughout despite certain predictabilities in the story arc, in what is a resonant, complete cinematic experience punctuated by personality and precision.

So much better than Boy Erased because it dares to be both bold and funny -- and also pretty dramatic when it has to be. Chlöe's best acting role.

Fairly likeable, underwhelming movie which seems wrong for the subject matter.

The sensual rock tunes of Kim Deal have turned many a lady. The Amps album is easily better than any Breeders or Pixies record tho...

Certainly better than something like Boy Erased, but still leaves a lot to be desired. For a 2018 film that handles these kinds of themes with a bit. Ore originality and care see Giant Little Ones.

I like the anti-religion theme, and it's an important topic, but it's not very engaging. It's not a film to watch more than once.

Well-acted and likable both in terms of character work and subject matter, showing how even the "nice" versions of psychological torture fuck people up. Plotwise, though, it tends to just fizzle out, and I'm not sure the period-piece setting does it any favours.

Nicely done, not once overacted. Props to Moretz for really stepping out of her child-actor comfort zone. Girl can deliver.

A small and personal portrayal of gay conversion therapy and the emotional and physical harm that people will do to themselves and others in the name of conformity and faith.

If the world tells you there's something deeply wrong with you, are they right? A look into the world of "praying the gay away" and the consequences for the teachers and students of these institutions alike. While not world moving, its a perfectly good movie with heart and soul.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is lacking. That's not to say it doesn't have cathartic, moving scenes, or a deeply compelling narrative at its core, but there's something missing here. The performances are all solid, even if the characters they portray are strangely underdeveloped and shallow. A more natural, quietly honest film than Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased, but also a less engaging, heartbreaking one despite their horrific shared subject matter. Worth trying, but your milage may vary.

A perfectly decent film in itself, but still feels timid, outdated and uninspired.
