Brush up your theology. Buñuel pursues what may seem like a constraining idea, but he makes it work (or in other words, more evidence for von Trier's idea that sometimes a filmmaker needs "obstructions" in order to free themselves, not that Buñuel seemed to suffer from a problem of that nature).

You've got to be really into religion to enjoy this. They talk about it endlessly, and bicker over it, and fight over it. I am not into religion, so it was a real struggle to get through it. On a technical level, it was purely mediocre. There are moments of humor, but not many, and they're not all that amusing. The structure is much like Phantom of Liberty, a series of loosely interconnected stories. But it was tedious and plodding. The Bunuel surrealism that I like so much was barely t

"Though highly regarded in some circles, The Milky Way may be the worst film Buñuel ever made; at the very least, it may be his most jaded and inhuman." - Ed Gonzalez

Even for someone interested in the subject, this is overdone. My least favorite Buñuel.

Who but Bunuel could make a great film of the heresies of the catholic church?

I thought the thrust behind the film in general and the scenes specifically was much more interesting than the actual execution. A meditation on religion, it's history and people's motivations, it's reasonably engaging and features some funny moments throughout, but there were many times when the speeches seemed to go on and on and there were a whole lot of references that went over my head. While a foundation in Catholicism isn't necessary to get the film, it would probably increase enjoyment.

A theology degree might help one appreciate this absurdist odyssey of Christianity throughout the ages. Perhaps Buñuel's most sympathetic (or at least neutral) take on the faithful and their peculiar idiosyncrasies; it unfolds like a lightly feverish dream.

You almost need a doctorate in theology to follow some of the logical lines of thinking here (Buñuel must have really taken a lot of notes in Catholic school); because of this, the film seems very slow, and that's not helped by the weird temporal jumps. The humor sometimes comes across as somebody poking you and muttering, "Can you believe this?" I liked it, yet I can't say that I really enjoyed it.

This was yet another French satire that did absolutely nothing for me.

This could be called 'The Phantom of God' (remembering that it is the first film in Buñuel's 'search for truth' trilogy) in light of the focus on the double nature of God (as transcendental and immanent) and the feuds between atheists and believers, and even more interestingly the fights between different Catholic ecclesiastical traditions, in regard to God's true nature. As always, Buñuel unleashes his surrealism to uncanny effect. Rating likely to increase on additional viewings.

Very mean but also fair. Luis doesn't get much credit for the latter. Good thing he lived in his time and had a thing for Christians. Had he lived today and had a thing for muslims, let's say he wouldn't have stayed in his flesh for long.

Stellar opening, lots of interesting pieces are here... as a film it's a bit more on the loose side than you would like. Least favorite Buñuel.

A picaresque examination of Catholic doctrine, full of surface interest but requiring special knowledge for full appreciation.

Bunuelian absurdity at its best. One of his more entertaining and most hilarious works.

Heresies, by the master of heresy. This film has my favorite Bunuel gags (the Pope dream sequence "overheard" by a passerby, the insane priest), and a more linear narrative (...for Bunuel), connected through the Quixotic modern-day pilgrimage of the bums. A personal favorite. God bless Bunuel.

Pain, folks. Great pain. I was never a Bunuel fan anyway, but this is packed with religious humor/satire that was done eight times better many times on "Dave Allen At Large"

I thought it got pretty boring at times, but for the most part, I was engaged and genuinely entertained. I do find religion and people's motivations for following it to be somewhat fascinating though.
