Jerry Welbach (Pitt) is a reluctant bagman who has been given two ultimatums: The first is from his mob boss to travel to Mexico and retrieve a priceless antique pistol, known as "The Mexican"...or suffer the consequences. The second is from his girlfriend Samantha (Roberts) to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures alive and in trouble with Samantha is better than the more permanent alternative, so he heads south of the border. (Dreamworks SKG)

Half of this movie is Julia Roberts' face. I couldn't dissuade you more if I told you a full viewing came with syphilis.

I give this movie a 50 for missing the logic ending point and continuing with another half hour of pointless film.

Crime rom-com w Pitt, Roberts, and Gandolfini. Who wouldn't want to see that? Love the bits of flashback to magic pistol lore.

Terrific road movie fired by three first-rate star performers - by separating Pitt and Roberts, both actors are given fine showcases to play to their strengths without competing for the limelight, and Gandolfini complements them perfectly by bringing the "character actor" grit. The sparky and witty dialogue/characterisations make this something special - Pitt seems to be in training for BURN AFTER READING at times! - all tied to the absurd, but strangely touching mythos around the titular item.

I remember hating this movie when I saw it the first time. I really enjoyed a lot of it this time around. I really liked the story but I also liked the story within a story that was being told. Roberts and Pitt have great chemistry but Roberts and Gandolfini was also full of chemistry. I loved all of the scenes in Mexico and I think they did a good job of portraying Mexico except for the fact that everybody in Mexico spoke English for the most part. I thought the ending was nice too.

This was the first film were director Verbinski showd his real talent or at least came famous. Movie itself is a bit weird but in a very good way. A wold say it's special. And one of the best movies released in 2001.

Really, really annoying three main characters ruin what could have been an interesting story. Is filmed well enough and has a few good scenes to at least keep it watchable.

A thoroughly enjoyable quirky crime-comedy, calling to mind 2008's Burn After Reading: Each have an eclectic cast of characters (two of whom are played by Pitt and Simmons, the former playing an inept yet brash character in both), and a chaotic plot full of twists and mishaps that revolves around a single object desired by many. In The Mexican, touches of surprising romance and emotional drama (see the great Winston-Samantha duo) are added to the comedy to make it a truly entertaining watch.

The script really is weak but I nevertheless (mostly) enjoyed it - it's a pretty predictable and fun ride.

Fairly entertaining with a surprisingly likable Brad Pitt and a more or less annoying Julia Roberts - though that came less as a surprise. All in all an entertaining movie about a gun and people's relationships in general, which is not as confusing as it intends to be. But this way you can easily chat with friends and still follow the storyline...

Trifling crime comedy slash road movie which for some reason, out of the truckloads of scripts dumped at their individual doorsteps, captured the fancy of both Roberts and Pitt. (Typical Roberts line, spoken to her abductor: "You know, you're a very sensitive person for a cold-blooded killer." Typical Pitt line, spoken to his mule: "You're such an ass.") Clearly this is a match made in talent-agent heaven.

While Pitt and Roberts are almost unbearable when together, the lone adventures of Pitt are fun to watch, and Gandolfini totally stole the show when interacting with Roberts. Overall it's a nice little comedy, plus - it looks fantastic, as everything else from Verbinski.

I don't even know why I would go this high. Maybe I am feeling generous this is one crapfest. You get nothing out of it and in the end you are ready to turn it off before the credits. Check it out once, put it in its sleeve and send it back and don't let anybody know it is an unspoken film amongst us film watchers. Kind of like a secret handshake except everyone can see that we look 10 years olders after watching this snoozefest.
