Pretty bad, and VERY early '90s, but it's too good-natured and well-intentioned to really hate. And it has a few funny bits.

Incredibly charming, full of heart, and a lot of fun from start to finish. At least it was for me and my group of friends. Not a "good" film by any commonly used definition of that word but I can honestly recommend checking it out. Robert Townsend is one of the most naive and/or charming leading men I've seen in a while.

True story: When I was in 8th grade, two books remained in my backpack the entire year for some reason. Those books were the Meteor Man movie novelization and "No Shirt No Shoes No Problem" by Jeff Foxworthy. This I still have no explanation for.

Townsend tries hard and has a lot of friends helping, not enough to get by terrible writing.

The Golden Lords are the best fictional DC gang I've seen. I also read the novelization to this. Yeah.

Fantastic urban classic in the tradition of....Wait a minute, who am I kidding? Really poor, but good-natured.

It has its heart in the right place, but it just falls flat without any real laughs or memorable moments. I liked Townsend's funny (if uneven) Hollywood Shuffle, but he doesn't bring any of that wit or charm here.

As others have noted, it is a well intentioned failure that tried to create a black superhero decades before Black Panther. Its urban setting keeps it grounded in a somewhat tangible 'reality', which really distinguished it from other comic book films of the time, but neither Townsend's writing or direction inspire much confidence, and he is not a leading man.

In spite of some awkwardness, it's still a unique take on the superhero genre from a representation standpoint.

Townsend is more important as a filmmaker for reasons outside the actual frames on the screen. Doesn't change this boring, childish romp.
