A deeply sinister undercurrent runs through this film which has powerful performances from Bronson and Vincent. A believable vision of an ageing hitman with some increadibly dark moments to the film. Excellent characterisation and with moments of real pathos. Catch it if you can.

The periods of silence in this film are great. The brooding and deliberate planning is captured well by Winner and, of course, portrayed succinctly by the quiet boar that is Bronson. But then there is some meh action and the double meh that is Jan-Michael Vincent.

Straight-ahead, unpretentious Charles Bronson action movie. It has a simple point-to-point sort of sensibility that's unexpectedly becoming. The ending is especially good

No frills actioner from the 70's starring Bronson as a tough as nails assassin for hire. Jan-Michael Vincent has the screen presence of wallpaper.

The 3rd act gets a little lazy (Bronson finds the file too easily & the end could've used a bigger twist), but the rest of this is a nice surprise. Having expected an early version of a badass assassin who's got to reluctantly help someone out, or get rid of criminals who are much worse than he is, I got a hitman who's far more realistic than descendants like John Wick. And it's compelling! Bronson's perfectly cast as a sociopath who feels nothing & there's an excellent motorcycle chase as well

Everything you expect it to be and nothing more. Apparently they're remaking it, how exciting.

Action movies like this don't exist anymore. If you see a movie with a real explosion in the 2020s you can't help but wonder if you're being tricked or if they finally found a CG guy who is really good at fire. It's fun seeing Charles Bronson caught in this depressing montage of the badass, so salivating for someone to share his life with that he adopts an even bigger sociopath than he is. The resolution is funny and satisfying.

Charles Bronson being mothafuckin' Charlie Bronson. Aaaand that's pretty much it. A couple cool explosions here and there. Plus a (spoiler: twist ending!) but there was also a lot of downtime, slow, boring parts for an action/suspense film. I'm sure there are some philosophical nuggets to really dive into, character wise, but is that why you watch a 70s Bronson film for?

Nice piece of existentialist brooding, courtesy of Winner and Bronson; Vincent’s smarmy blandness is used expertly in support, and there’s a fine cameo from Wynn, but this is really Bronson’s film all the way, playing at a subtle, underdone simmer most of the time, while dropping the mask occasionally to reveal the wounded terror beneath. Ironically loses some of its momentum when during some kinetic chase scenes – they’re done well, but break the spell created by Bronson’s underplaying.

Ponderous, poorly written, poorly acted "action" film has Bronson going for it but that's about all.

In contrast to the "Death Wish" series, "The Mechanic" is quiet and contemplative, too much for it's own good. It feels mundane and aimless, and when it ended it felt like my time wasn't worth it.

Viewed May 27, 2021. Michael Winner is out of his element when it comes to directing this downbeat, ice cold thriller about an emotionless hitman quietly experiencing an existential crisis. The film's best parts are effectively minimalist and clinical, if only because Bronson's emphatically world-weary energy goes a long way.

Jason Statham and Ben Foster turn in enjoyable performances, but this superficial remake betrays them with mind-numbing violence and action thriller cliches.

Good action flick from Bronson & Winner with nice which is not quite as good as their latter "Death Wish". Script is good, Winner's direction is solid and Bronson fits his role perfectly. I also enjoyed the vintage locations. Vincent's young protegee brings some freshness to the mix, and I thought he played very well together with Bronson. The score sounds better suited for a thriller which creates a menacing atmosphere, but the film might have used some 70's funk to spice up the action scenes.

Charles Bronson plays a different, unusual character. Bronson is very good in this film. The movie is dated and the story overall does not always work. The script has some interesting ideas but the only interesting character in the movie is the lead one. What makes the film worth watching is the final third of the movie.

First ten minutes of this film has practically no dialogue. Enjoyed it. Charles Bronson on top form and a fresh faced Jan Michael Vincent. So much better than the remake.
