Erich von Stroheim was an enigmatic figure in Hollywood, but he rarely had the personality to carry a sound film by himself. Especially not when working for what was left of poverty row. With that said, The Mask of Diijon (1946) is a surprisingly effective little film. They definitely tried to make the most of the limitations they had. Mildly haunting.
