The tale is legend and Mamoulian retells it with economy and flair. Power is heroic, Rathbone is evil, and Darnell is ravishing. A great classic adventure that has stood the test of time far, far better than, say, 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'.

The Mark of Zorro is great fun but a little light on action; there are a couple of chases and a marvellous duel, but little else in the way of swashbuckling. Fortunately the foppish act put on by Vega to divert suspicion is far more entertaining than any swordplay, and Power plays the part perfectly, assisted ably by Rathbone, Sondergaard and Bromberg in lively supporting roles. The music is pretty trite but the sets and costumes look excellent.

This was so much fun! It's quite surprising how well it's aged too. I don't really know what else to say other than it's good swashbuckling action. Rathbone could have done with a bit more screen time and being more villainous. Linda Darnell positively glows every time she's on screen.

I suppose I prefer this to later Zorro adaptations. Having been made nearer in time to the heyday of pulp adventure fiction, it better preserves that spirit; but it's still an objectively bad movie. Its saving grace is the swordplay: there is very little of it, but it's much more realistic than you usually see from Hollywood. Basil Rathbone who plays the antagonist was a real-life fencing champion, and he also coached Tyrone Power (Zorro).

A slightly darker version (in tone and in photography) of Adventures of Robin Hood, and it's a bit fun to see elements we'd see repeated in Batman storylines a few years later. The cast is pretty mesmerizing, which is good as there's a little less swashbuckling than one probably expects. Somewhat surprising they didn't make an immediate sequel or two.

The Mark of Zorro (1940) is a highly entertaining film featuring larger-than-life characters. Tyrone Power delivers a standout performance as Zorro, utilizing his intelligence to rectify the injustices committed by wealthy and greedy men. Even today, the movie remains an enjoyable viewing experience and a must-watch for those seeking a fun and thrilling adventure.

A Marca do Zorro estreava há 80 anos em Cincinnati. Zorro é antifa. Sério, se você pegar qualquer manual antifa vai ver como Diego de La Vega segue à risca o modus operanti antifascista, em todo caso esse filme é uma delícia. Plus: A bunda do Tyrone Power naquela calça apertada. BlurayRip RARBG.

Compared with the earlier Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), I liked this one better. Great choreography, not too much lighthearted humor, nice performance by Basil Rathbone as the main antagonist and some serious issues that are brought up. However there are some problems with how the story progresses and at times choices made by the characters are somewhat hard to follow. Still enjoyable overall

Ostig familjeunderhållning, men ändå relativt underhållande och lagom lång (dvs kort). Betyg: svag trea.@Bryant Park

Tyrone Power totally kills it as Zorro!!! He definitely kills Basil Rathbone in an absolutely mesmerizing swordfight! This role was made for him. He even outshined the original Zorro, Douglas Fairbanks, exactly 20 years after the original The Mark of Zorro (1940) was made. While the film is economic on action, Tyrone's personality is so vibrant that ones doesn't even notice it! And because of that this becomes a classic Zorro!

This is what I can't help but like about the old high seas adventures and swashbuckling romances of the 1930s and '40s: It opens with a title card saying, "Madrid - when the Spanish Empire encompassed the globe, and young blades were taught the fine and fashionable art of killing..." So what's that, like 18...30? 1840? I guess we'll figure it out. And so we do, of course. But there was an unabashed syrupy-ness about the melodramatic urgency given to these movies.

I admit I missed the start, but I loved every bit of the rest.

It's a bit sillier than I expected but still a good deal of fun.

The most enjoyable of all swashbucklers. Powers performance is marvelously fey, Rathbone and Sondergaard are at the top of their form, and Linda Darnell has never been more beautiful.

Very standard-issue for a movie that I've heard is a classic all my life. All the elements are here -- good guys, bad guys, swordfights, chases, The Babe, etc., etc. -- delivered without much inspiration or deviation from the strictly expected... and the hero acts way too much like an idiot for me to believe that he's a legendary guerrilla warrior for truth and justice
