The Dickie plot is good but then you have the guys playing Paulie and Sylvio show up acting like some Italian minstrel show cartoon people. This was 2 hours of me waiting for the Sopranos theme Woke up this morning, watched a turtle cum.

As a huge fan of The Sopranos, this was just terrible. It has no Sopranos vibe at all. No story. No humour. That racism card was completely unnecessary and unrelated to the story. Speaking of the story, what is the story of this movie? It takes place in the golden age of mafias but it doesn't even feel like a mafia movie. Utterly disappointing.

Absolutely only for existing fans of the series. I'd also recommend a refresher on the series before going in because 90% of the enjoyment here is just making the connections between the show and this prequel. Everybody is basically doing an impression, some of which come off as missed comedy and some of which are incredible (Farmiga is truly outstanding).

Some missteps (young Silvio is a walking timeline contradiction) but overall I loved it. Fills out the backstories of several characters from the series with details that are ironic or tragic in hindsight, while also standing on its own two legs as the story of Dickie Moltisanti. I can't think of another TV series tie-in movie that functioned so well both as its own thing and as an extension of the show. And if it's anything at all like the series, I'll like it even more in another two viewings.

If you love The Sopranos, this will most likely reward you with plenty of Easter eggs and references to the TV series. It does have that extended TV episode feeling it and is a bit structurally all over the place, but you learn a bit more about the people who were important to Tony Soprano in his youth. It's fun connecting the dots and if anything else, a nice little bonus for fans and a fitting Prologue for the TV series. If you haven't seen the show, don't see this first or you won't get it.

So anytime Farmiga or Gandolfini are on screen, you can imagine it'd be amazing flashback material in the show itself, but fuck me the rest is awful. Silvio is a bad SNL impression AND you're going to do the identical twin thing again? It's not a Tony Soprano origin story and it's not really about the Newark riots. I would advise fans of the show to not watch it because of how off base Junior's depiction is, and Dickie Moltisanti's death was better when it was ambiguous.

An endless sequence of name dropping of Sopranos characters, that's not enough substance for a feature film.

Kind of anticlimactic, but it’s fine. I went in not knowing what it was going to be about and I think I was a bit disappointed because of that.

This feels like Sopranos light. At times almost unrelated to the universe (of which there are a thousand interesting stores that could have been explored), it dwells on a relationship between a never known character and the another we only knew as a ghost. Some of the performances are truly great , mirroring their Sopranos counterparts, others its simply a "oh, he's supposed to be X'. All in all this is only a worthwhile venture for big fans of the series to spot some fun connections.

ok the one good thing about this movie is the son. the rest fluctuates between the shallow, the forgettable and the incomprehensible. honestly, I would NOT recommend it to Sopranos fans who are accustomed to a certain level of subtlety. if you like random bullshit and "remember whens" this might be for you. if they were testing the waters to see if the audience would accept the new Tony for a new project a la Better Call Saul, I may be willing to re evaluate this thing. but if this is it, wtf?

It's... Aimless; easily half an hour could have been cut. Nivola's powerhouse performance, however, makes it worth the watch. Barely.

This was pretty lambasted upon release, which is unfortunate because it is a worthwhile addition to the canon. There are plenty of easter eggs for more hardcore fans of the series, and the story is well-paced and well told. Perhaps the most impressive part is the casting. Funnily enough, John Magaro as a younger Silvio Dante is particularly impeccable.

They took a very ordinary Mafia plot, bolted on some weak civil rights commentary and gave it to some Sopranos fanboys to add some gimmicky Easter eggs and who's who. The Sopranos deserved better than this

I wonder if the reason this did so badly was that fans hadn't seen the original show in such a long time they could no longer spot some of the details linking some of these characters to the aged characters on the show. I watched this right after watching the whole series, so that didn't affect me. & although there are at least 2 storylines to follow (w/ the black guy's feeling the least connected), I thought they tied up nicely in terms of the backdrop that gave birth to the Tony we know.

I liked it, despite the fact it's wildly different from the show in tone, and the choice in script/outcomes is much different than I would've expected. David Chase wanted to do something different, and the result is very enjoyable, just unexpected. I also like the casting choices being different from the show's flashbacks, because this is much ... rougher. 26AUG2023

In the first 30-40 minutes, I was like "Bah, it is a blatant cashing on The Sopranos" but after a while Moltasanti character found its footing and Farmiga made a great interpretation of the "Toxic mother" (That shooting scene between mother and father Sopranos in the car was crazy). Michael Gandolfini did justice to his father's character I think and after a while these "younger versions of Sopranos characters " became enjoyable.

The Many Saints of Newark is a great movie for those who needed more Sopranos. For people like me who haven't actually finished or watched the original series, it isn't that great of a stand alone story. Even though I haven't watched all of the original series, I could see the wires leading from these scenes back to the original series and in that way a lot of the plot seemed forced. I did enjoy a lot of this movie. The story kept me involved but wierdly the Oedipal issue wasn't addressed at all

A disappointing sequel to The Sopranos that does very little with any of the established younger characters except do cringey nudge-wink fan service. This is in the second half, but the first half, although admittedly dealing with people and events tenuously linked to the show, shows stronger material.

If this prequel to "The Sopranos" was simply a stand-alone, 1960's set gangster film, it would be okay ... a fairly average story with a pretty good cast, some of whom are really firing on all cylinders. The fact that it has multiple plot threads that never really coalesce into a vision for what the movie is about would count against it, but it would exist as an okay way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Outside of Nivola and Farmiga there's even less reason to see this than EL CAMINO. Does Livia have any real scenes? What little she's given to do, or get done to her, seems like Chase trying to rewrite his way out of criticisms that the show demonized women with personality disorders or something. And what humour? The closest to a laugh in the whole thing is "...varsity athlete", which is the best of a lame lot of callbacks. Stoll is okay, but the rest of the Goombah Babies are awful.

Absolutely amazing movie if you love the series and you enjoy this style of movie. It adds more depth to a world that is already fully immersive. Nicola, Gandolfini and Farmiga are the stand outs on the acting front and it sure does not disappoint for long time fans. Wow. I can't say enough positive things about this movie. Absolutely an edge of your seat character drama that fills in the gaps. It will make you want more and make you want to do a rewatch of the series.

There’s a lot of flaws, but at its core this is vintage Chase - the humour, the flirtations with the supernatural, the refusal to mythologise these killers. Should have been a miniseries because there’s SO much to explore, especially with regards to the Harold storyline, unfortunately given short shrift here. So many amazing performances, especially Gandolfini. I’m so glad this wasn’t a Tony Soprano origin story like the advertising hinted at. A compelling addition to the world.

The only reason this pygmy thing gets a 4 is because the scene where Dickie imagines being a baseball coach for blind kids made me laugh really hard. The Sopranos is my favorite show of all time. This movie is my least favorite movie of all time. Only an asshole like David Chase could be the creator of both. I apologize to Michael Gandolfini for how this piece of garbage turned out. You did great. Livia was great. Everyone else should be taken out back and shot. Fuck Harold. #notmyunclejun

I read somebody somewhere refer to this as Young Sheldon with ziti, which pretty much yeah. It's more than that, though. My favorite types of movies are ones where regular schlubs become heroes and/or regular schlubs become titanic, tragic fuckups. I'll let you figure out which one of those types of movies this is.

I guess I wasn't actually expecting this to be as good as the series. With the show's reputation, that would probably be unreasonable. But I guess I was hoping for El Camino. A movie that didn't quite live up to Breaking Bad, but was still good enough. While I didn't hate Many Saints of Newark, it was still not close to El Camino's level. walked away from this thinking it was just okay but disappointing, but now that I think about it, it's probably a bad movie for how bland it is.
