Can titles make one a true aristocrat? Can riches make one a bourgeois? Can a monster be a hero? Abducted and mutilated as a child, Gwynplaine has become a popular fairground attraction as "The Man Who Laughs" due to the diabolical smile carved on his face. When he discovers that he is in fact the heir to titles and riches, Gwynplaine resolves to use his position to plead the cause of the poor and the abused.
