The Man Called Back
Remove ads
Fresh from his success with the moody melodrama Murders in the Rue Morgue, director Robert Florey dashed off The Man Called Back at bargain-basement Tiffany Studios. The film is set in the tropics; Conrad Nagel tops the cast as a dissipated, derelict doctor, hopelessly in love with married socialite Doris Kenyon. Doris' insane husband John Halliday commits suicide, but arranges the evidence so that his wife will be charged with murder. (allmovie.com)

The last film to be produced by ambitious poverty row outfit Tiffany. They actually got an stellar supporting cast, and Conrad Nagel does a respectable job in the lead. But I guess that left very little in the budget for production values. Includes much needed work on the script. For that's what hurts this film the most. Dwells too much around pointless stuff in cheap environments, giving it's actors very little to work their characters around. Barely a sparkle in their eyes.
