Yes, it's too long, too melodramatic, and too politically ham-fisted ("McCarthyism bad!" might as well be burned into every frame), but the strong performances, solid direction, and powerful sense of nostalgia won me over in the end. Not brilliant or anything, but quite enjoyable.

I thought it was a rather good movie, not stellar or anything and the scenes with the House of Un-American Activities Committee, while good in a melodramatic sense, are just unbelievably far-fetched if you know anything about that period of history. Still the movie itself is good and Jim Carrey proves that he is able to perform well in dramatic roles and not just comedy.

It's a soggy slog through lost-love tearjerking, postwar flag-waving, anti-McCarthy piety, nostalgia for small towns and old movies and neon. The man with two false fronts -- neither a commie nor a war hero -- is buried in false sentiment. Darabont's only degree of restraint (there's no quota on nose-to-the-screen closeups) is to cut it half an hour shorter than the three hours of his Green Mile.

Largely lacks spark, is badly in need of some semblance of a sense of humor, plays out predictably past the first act, is overly melodramatic, and is way overlong. The sappy soundtrack tries too hard. It's well acted, well staged, powerful at times toward the end, and superbly cinematic in a classical sense, but is lacking, and disappointed this Darabont fan.

Jim Carrey may have gotten off of the blacklist, but this movie basically destroyed the career of the director of The Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile, so I guess the good guy doesn't always win.

I don't know...I think Jim Carrey was emboldened by the success of the Truman Show, but Drama just isn't his strong suit. Not bad, not great...if it's on TV for free you should watch it.

THE MAJESTIC is a rare breed in today's filmmking, a throwback to the golden days of Hollywood where the "good guys always win" and the protaganonist always gets the girl.

Jim Carrey, surprisingly, shines in this film. This story was original and intriguing, which I always enjoy. It's a bit of a slow film, but it keeps pulling you along.

The lack of irony in directing or film score really wreck this for me, the way having it filmed in front of a live audience would. Love late stage drama Carrey but this early shot wasn’t Carrey’s best, but rather his version of Pitt’s Joe Black. Schmaltz through the roof & heavyhanded emotional manipulation make it barely tolerable without constantly wanting to puke the media & be cleansed from it. Bummer, cos the concept was cool. Maybe nostalgia factors into the other ratings? I saw in 2024.

In The Majestic Carrey hadn't quite honed his drama acting to the heights it achieved later in his career. An okay movie that never ventures deeper into the social and psychological aspects of living a life you don't recognize as your own (apart from Carrey looking extremely uncomfortable half the running time). This movie is just about as conformative and forgettable as the grand speech at the end.

Unbearably long. I wouldn't say 'doomed' by its plot, but given almost no chance by its plot. Boiled down, an amnesiac learns to be like the better man he was mistaken for, ends up moving into said man's life. A sad and depressing tale, but the Darabont plays it as saccharinely as possible.

I really liked that movie. I guess I didn't expect so many things. Because I knew it that we can't see any film just as Truman Show from Jim Carrey. He has starred in some good movies but I think The Majestic is not bad at all. Maybe it was unneccessary that movie ran over 2 hours.

Enjoyable homage to small town America with huge sentimental dollops of post war flag waving and belittling of the foul McCarthyism surrounding Hollywood at the time. Whilst I prefer Carrey in straight roles, he was totally out of his depth here, and his big scene was VERY weak; marred with close-ups where you just expected him to start gurning into the camera ... his performance seriously weakened the impact of the film. A generally strong cast, huge plotholes, over-long, but enjoyable.

What lies beneath its moments of beauty and heart is only the feeling that we are seeing a copy. It's Darabont trying to be Capra. It's Jim impersonating Jimmy Stewart. Actually, he has a very good imitation of this guy. But it's on YouTube, not in The Majestic.
