The Lovers

A simple love square story that goes from good to very good when the son and his girlfriend enter the picture two thirds in. Strong performances and an interesting score.

I don't get, really. It just seems so improbable, and the son is reacts in a very odd way as well.

Boring.

Although the subject; it was good.

From the opening this had a hard time keeping me involved. Some will say that The Lovers has a sweeping, romantic score that punctuates all the drama, but to me it came across as cheesy. The acting and dialogue is completely wonky, so any interesting ways that it could delve into these relationships is held back by good actors phoning it in. For a while I thought this was meant to be a parody of romance movies but it's not.

Of course, no matter what potentially positive marriage messages you mine from this well-acted, R-rated dramedy, other significant issues remain. You'll be witness to the exposed skin, realistic lovemaking and raw language of this movie's middle-aged protagonists. And you'll spend two hours with some rather unmoored individuals who are just as flawed and messy as the various relationships they're flailing around in.
