It's not really that refreshing or surprising, but the gender reversal in this kidnapped-and-torture-based-squirm-in-your-seat-film worked well enough to make it stand out. Just a little bit. Enough to give away your position behind the couch as you try to escape from the house where you've been chained up for days, being forced to write Criticker reviews for some weird guy who is too bad at them himself and SOMEONE CALL FOR HELP I THINK I'M BEING HELD ON A REMOTE FARM SOMEWHERE OH GOD

Awesome horror gem. Quality trash seems an applicable oxymoron because if there is such a thing, this is definitely it. Perfect shots, hilarious moments - and very uncomfortable ones. I was expecting the two story strands to reconnect but they never did. Which was weird. If I were to ever program a Midnight Movie Madness slot, this would be one of my top picks. That creepy teenage song still haunts me sometimes.

It could be the fact that I first saw this in 2017, but the fact that it was torture porn was a little disappointing. However, it did cause a feeling of horror beyond cringe. Like, even the creepy girl asking him out gave me chills. You ever say no to someone who you know just isn't accepting no as an answer? It's real spooky. Anyway, this film captures that weird relationship horror really well and goes beyond the usual stalk and slash route. But damn, was the market ever bloated with TP.

I'd never thought I'd see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reimagined as an Australian high school movie, but I like the result. It's violent, dark, funny and twisted.

A little better than your typical horror movie, with an unusual tone, some nice photography, and uneven acting. Odd that the two stories, which only had a loose connection in the beginning, only have a loose connection in the end too (and a fairly contrived one). Watchable and unusual, as long as your expectations aren't too high.

I honestly don't think it's fair to call this torture porn. Sure there is torture, but there's also far more substance than the torture porn sub-genre is known to have. The script reinvents itself often enough to stay fresh, the protagonist is well defined with little dialogue, and the exploration of familial love, both lost and twisted, are all elevating factors.

This is one twisted movie. I liked the idea that the last people you'd expect are the psychos, and they get to win quite a lot. And their torture is truly no-holds-barred. However, the pacing was off in this movie, Act 1 took too long, and there were distracting characters who added very little. So I wasn't fully on board until quite a bit later than I'd like. Plaudits for the acting and for originality, although the plot was let down again by the deus-ex ending. Cool idea but average execution.

Sean Byrne has given two extremely effective horror films that succeed in making the audience squirm. In this first outing, a strong female antagonist powers the film through some gnarly gore and bizarre family dynamics. Another reason I'm a coffee fan over tea.

Fun throughout and occasionally trepan-tastic. Refreshingly manages to not take itself too seriously -without- slipping into snide genre-mockery. Slick production and while I don't think it quite worked, I strangely respect the commitment to that parallel, contrasting story thing.

Grossly underrated horror film. The suspense is right up where it needs to be, and the makers of this film know their audience. The camera knows when the threat of terrible things is enough to get us on the edge of our seats, when to cut away from the horrible, and when it's absolutely necessary to show everything and lay the cards on the table. Our female lead is insane and scary on a level I have not seen since Kathy Bates in misery. Absolutely delightful.

Small, mildly entertaining, well acted, almost torture-porn movie. I guess the hype came from the psychotic being a woman rather than a man, but this has been done before and much better.

This film veered into torture p*rn territory for seemingly no other reason than to satisfy people who shouldn't be free to roam the streets, making it not only unpleasant to watch but also concerning that it was produced.

Technically well-crafted but it's another movie about psychotic torturers. And they don't tie very good knots, so it's easy to escape, but of course if the movie's only half over you're going to get recaptured, etc. Making the villain a girl and the victim a boy isn't enough of an innovation to hang a movie on. The material is so thin that they added a B-plot that never amounts to anything or ties back up to the main story. It's just there to make this a feature instead of a short.

Maybe too sadistic and not satirical enough for me. That being said, every cut, smash, drill, etc. has real weight. Byrne is major, even if this is, I think, not nearly that good when compared to The Devil's Candy.

I thought I had this movie pegged so it sat idle on my watchlist for several years. I was wrong. No one could have this movie pegged. It goes from crazy to crazier. It is completely different than what I thought it would be the entire time. It is deeply disturbing and very hard to watch. There was a poppy song played throughout the movie that I had stuck in my head when it was over. The song reminded me of the disturbing experience, and this cycle continued to engage me hours after watching.

The Loved Ones is not a film for kids, or for people who don't like seeing lots of bad things happen to a relatively decent person. But if you like perverse movies in which someone is tortured despite doing nothing wrong, well, you can do a lot worse than this one. It's gleefully violent, sometimes darkly humorous, and has some solid acting on the part of its leads. Its pacing is wrong, and its non-torture subplots add nothing but padding it to feature length, but it's still a good watch.

Some ghastly graphics but an utterly unconvincing story. A demented father and daughter team capture people, lobotomize them, then collect the zombies in their basement. Stupid plot with a few comedic moments and music intended to get on your last nerve. There are only a few satisfying scenes in this otherwise entirely ridiculous horror fest. Some frontal nudity helps improve the score. Not for the faint of heart, nor anyone looking for any credibility in a story.

A horrible first act with minimal characterization turns into an excellent and nerve-racking torture horror film. Gory as hell and creepy without relying on jump scares this is a fun movie that made me truly hate the antagonist (Who is portrayed brilliantly by Robin McLeavy) If only the direction and the first act matched the other parts of the film and we could have had a modern day classic.

It'll do...stands out from the majority of the 'torture porn ' genre...and next to Wolf Creek in terms of Aussie horror. Some of the stuff is disturbing, but at the same time, I've seen so much shit that I find it funny and ridiculous, is that a bad thing?

The concept is nothing new, but there's an emotional brutality to it all that raises it above the typical "torture porn." There are some events in the last act that made me squirm and cheer more than any horror movie I've seen in years. I've never rooted for a horror protagonist more than I did here. That's saying a lot.
