Advertised as an epic adventure movie, but it's really a slow moving biography, cutting up jungle time with trips back to England and even a bout in WWI. Miller is below average, except in the looks department, Hunnam is lukewarm, but Pattinson really shines here. For some insane reason Gray tries to leave the ending up to your imagination, but it's pretty easy to guess what happened to Fawcett: he died, that's what happens when you go places where spiders eat birds, dude.

Hey, look, it's a movie about a white explorer hero telling us that not everything should be credited to white explorer heroes! Essentially a cross of The Revenant and that Monty Python skit about... well, this guy, I suppose. Based On A True Story so you know you're supposed to like it. Harmless, streamlined Herzog-lite with some gorgeous moments.

A classicist adventure film, the subtle surface pleasures of which conceal a whirling eddy of emotions: the simultaneity of discovery and destruction, the loss of youth and innocence, the fear and freedom of the unknown, the insatiable appetite for what remains tantalizingly beyond our grasp...It's a throwback period picture with a restrained contemporary sensibility, wedding the promise of adventure to the bittersweet nostalgia of a Malick film, Eden sought and lost in the same breath.

Only Gray could provide such a classicist adventure about a pro-natives English soldier searching for personal and historical glory in Amazonia. This is pure self-contained feeling -- echoes of Cimino's melodramas, signs of Malick's contemplative attitude towards nature -- in a jungle fever for the heart of life -- Fawcett sees Z as a hidden human treasure, not as a land of savages, but he also can't deny his "noble" sense of colonialism. Some things are meant to be discovered only by cinema.

Went into this thinking that it was the long-awaited sequel to World War Z. Was disappointed at the lack of zombies, but pleased that there was something else to be had from this (un)surprisingly beautiful "based on true-ish fact-like info-bits" film than brain-craving crazies crashing through the South American underbrush...though that could work as a sequel to World War Z, if you're listening, Hollywood.

I had high hopes for this - it seemed like it should have been good, like a modern day "Aguirre", but it's actually the least impressive thing James Gray had ever done. Some downright embarrassing features include the gender dialogue between Fawcett and his wife, the Murray character, and the platitudinal ending. Fawcett himself is written as a cliche. It isn't terrible, but I just wasn't expecting something so contrived.

A rather dull and unimaginative film about how men's (that is, male human) desire to undertake a quest conflicts with the virtues of domestic life, weighed down by some poorly written and painfully obvious scenes designed as (utterly familiar and predictable) comment on the times (for example, the fight between husband and wife, the public lecture). The director's next outing will consist in making the same film again, but this time set in outer space, and with an equally underwhelming finale.

Competently made. A bit long, but I liked the relaxed pace as it gives more time for soaking in the cinematography and for contemplation. The discussions on feminism and anti-racism were a bit too modern for the time it portrays, though these are only brief scenes. In some ways it's like a formulaic biopic, however there are also complex decisions and themes that are bold and refreshing. Most of all I enjoyed the transcendental dreamlike ending where we see Fawcett for the last time.

A well produced, well directed adventure film that misses certian opportunities to portray the multifaceted life of its subject. The film gives short shrift to Percy Fawcett's spiritual crisis, his rather elaborate religious beliefs (basically he was a Theosophist) information that provides crucial motivation for his search for the Lost Civilization of Z. The real Percy Fawcett was not only a man of science; but a seeker possessed of a powerful spiritual yearning.

The Lost City of Z seems overlong, the acting doesn't jump off the screen, and the story isn't particularly exciting. James Gray's direction seems fine and the film looks good, but it isn't enough to elevate the film above average. Probably worth one watch, but if you skip it, you aren't really missing much.

Gray manages to provide both a sense of adventure as well as an intensely personal statement about longing for something more than this world offers. This is about appreciating mystery, about searching elsewhere for what we need here, about our reach needing to exceed our grasp. But even as we might be carried away by such flights, Gray roots us in the real world of loss, sacrifice, and failure. Gray's film lives in the midst of a tension, between "this city" and "the city yet to be discovered."

Old fashioned adventure yarn is great fun, if a little long-winded and slowly paced (especially in the final third). Hunnam never really captures the fire and spirit of a man possessed (like a Kinski would), but his supporting cast make up for it - Pattinson's wonderfully bumbling sidekick is a highlight, even as Macfadyen's moustache twirling villiany is laid on a little thick. Meticulously detailed production design brings a vivid verisimilitude to this depiction of the early 20th century.

a GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL-esque argument for the timeliness of gray's bygone romanticism, but no amount of forced woke grandstanding will convince me this is anything more interesting than a throwback. he's not a good enough writer to modernise these tropes, but he's a good enough director to remind of their timelessness, and he should focus more on his strengths: evocative compositions, aesthetic flourishes driven by feeling, follow fawcett's example and use his camera to "seek what is beautiful".

In spite of the great production and the performances, the film is overly long and unfortunately your interest ebbs and flows a little bit. The story is interesting enough but knowing the inevitable actually hinders this film, and doesn't give you the pay off that you want from a film like this. You also teeter a little bit in regards to your empathy towards Fawcett and this has a huge impact on your enjoyment.

Does a good job of showcasing the jungle; the movie is shot really well, the cinematography is probably the star here. Everything else is fine. I mean, it's not the most exciting execution of a tale that should be ripe with adventure and danger, and it's a tad overlong, but all-in-all it's a relatively entertaining adventure.

THE LOST CITY OF Z is much like other James Gray films featuring protagonists pursuing doomed or quixotic goals. Here, a British explorer fights the orthodoxy of his colleagues and the forces of nature to prove his thesis about a lost civilization in heart of the Amazon. Except for a few moments that hint at the grit of economic imperialism, the film is predictably tasteful. But Gray is still talented enough to occasionally spin its restraint and sophistication into a dreamy philosophic swoon.

This is a slow-paced biographical period piece that probably isn't for everyone nor is it a film that one can watch more than once. Gray, in his film-scholarly, romantic temperament doesn't have a rousing, mad adventure film in him; so he makes a transcendental one, and for all the felt passage of time I admire the sadness and controlled beauty this approach slowly unravels.

Pretty bland for the most part. The chemistry between most of the characters is weak and uninteresting. Most of the character moments felt extremely rote and one dimensional. Plus I get the impression Percy Fawcett and his companions were overly lionized in this filmed, to the degree I question if most of the events depicted in this film even happened. I seriously doubt he was screwed over in reaching Z during one expedition, for example.

Has its moments, but far too disjointed and anticlimactic to be considered good. Feels like it would've been much better served as a miniseries with so much jumping between timeframes and tonalities. Gray does his best with the material before him, but it just feels like a story that doesn't need to be told.

I went into this expecting an Indiana Jones type of movie, which this is very much not. I had no idea this was based on a real person. It's done as a very serious drama. I think the acting is well done, although the story ended up being a very different kind of thing than I was expecting. While I appreciate what they were going for, at times the story direction became frustrating. It was a nice surprise seeing Tom Holland show up though.

A marvellous film. It shows the era of a different time with a lovely look into a true explorers life. A smooth soundtrack where we too get lost in the beauty of the green world. Everything comes together visually and all our senses are extremified as we follow the Major through the intense world. The ending is how we would expect, but it is done so artistically instead of realistically. The film does a good job of keeping an open mind even swaying my opinion that the savages are not true savage

Somewhere in-between Aguirre and The New World, without either their hypnotic or poetic momentum, respectively. Gray is no Herzog, and Darius - although always reliable - is no Chivo, either. For some reason, Gray is a director I never quite ‘understood’; He makes very respectable movies that kind of just exist and fade from my memory as soon as they’re over.

I have always liked the story of Z and this was the first - hopefully not the last - movie adaptation I have seen of it. Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be very good. Aside from not being a very interesting movie, the portrayal of the main character was really wrong. The movie version of Percy Fawcett was really not the person I've read about. If you are interested about the real stories of actual explorers, you can watch it; but reading about the topic might be a better choice.

A story of a man's obsession for discovery (and fame) with only a half-hearted attempt at exploring the personal cost of his undertaking--the characters tend to be fairly flat and their relationships hardly fleshed out. Gray delves even deeper into classical storytelling with T.L.C.O.Z, which is about a British explorer who pays a personal price for daring to dream beyond the limits of his time. It's a deliberately paced adventure that's perhaps too leisurely, and Gray's dialogue is often overly pointed, but it shares the romantic fatalism of his other films where the protagonist's fate seems tragically preordained rather than merely predictable. His journey into the heart of darkness is a welcome anachronism.

He has low screen presence not helped by the script giving him only one note: obsessed. So what we have here is a meticulously crafted and slow-moving film that captures the life of a man consumed by the heady beauty and aching magnetism of the unknown. It's less a movie about a man making great historical strides than it is about a man's obsessive need to put himself to the test, to reach beyond his own grasp. It's a tale of compulsive wanderlust that is best consumed with an unhurried understanding.

If the subject matter interests you (true story of an early 20th century British expedition to the jungles of the Amazon), then you very well might too. Just be advised that it's not an Indiana Jones action packed thriller. Even still, it doesn't barely crawl along like Scorsese's recent "Silence", for example.
