Bill Elliott was one of the very few screen cowboys who graduated from B-western hell to be doing larger budget films for Republic Pictures. Monogram picked him up in 1951 and The Longhorn was the first he did for them. And it might be one of Monogram's best westerns! Not that the studio had ever been ambitious with their many western productions, but here they have a full-fledged story and a rugged lead to lean on. And it works. First attempt and it doesn't feel like a downgrade from Republic.
