The Longest Yard is to The Shawshank Redemption what Over the Top is to Kramer Vs. Kramer. I prefer this to The Waterboy but I also prefer an onion sandwich to pea soup.

While this remake stays very closely to the original movie, it's still not as good for a couple reasons. Firstly, it just doesn't work quite as well in 2005. Secondly, and most important is that Adam Sandler as Crewe is such a poor choice, it's basically offensive, he has none of the swagger or charm that Burt did.

People enjoy complaining that it's an unrealistic look at prison life...but why were people expecting anything else. It's a movie full of athletes, rappers and wrestlers (few who have shown any acting chops). It's funny at times and the football scenes are decent. It's nothing amazing but I always seem to watch it when it's on TV...such as the moment of writing this review.

I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would. I think it actually suffered from being a remake because the film felt like it was set within some boundaries of what was supposed to happen. So some things ended up feeling forced and unnatural. Other than that, it's as amusing as most Adam Sandler movies.

Not a bad remake, but even better as a Sandler vehicle. Definitely one of his better, crowd-pleasing movies, stocked with humor and football action. Chris Rock is forgettable though.

Incredible lineup of 5 pro wrestling world champions from different companies that all somehow just managed to never work with each other. Kevin Nash steals the show and Stone Cold confusingly jobs out his Hollywood career for no good reason. Never much good, but always okay popcorn nonsense.

Benign entry from the “Happy Madison” stable is not aggressively unpleasant; whatever you think of Sandler, it’s undeniable that his “noughty” efforts attracted A-grade casts – the presence of Cromwell and Leachman helps boost this at least into the “watchable” stakes. Goes on far too long and overly complicates the warden’s battle plans into cartoonish super-villainy; like many Sandler films, the sudden death of a main character is an oddly harsh slap in the face for his audience.

It downplays the real world atmosphere the original carried while still creating a balance on the emotional front. This one simply didn't have that same feeling with Sandler in the main role. It's just not a role for him and not one that he is designed to succeed in. Solid enough around him and a fun comedy at times despite that major casting flaw. I would have gone with someone else in the lead as Sandler is often just not buyable in certain situations.

I'm all for a football movie, but this seemed meh at best. Sandler as a football player just didn't seem right, but he wasn't bad. Rock's character was by far my favorite of the movie, he did really well and was very likable. However, people like Crews and Irving felt stereotyped and I just didn't buy it. The movie is predicable, and although some of the football action was funny, it was also dumb in the same ways other Sandler movies are, as this was the start of many future duds for Sandler.

Adam Sandler remakes "The Longest Yard"(1974) with the expected silly juvenile style he has become known for. Fans of the original film's more gritty realistic take on the story may not enjoy the crude low-brow humor of the remake, but Sandler fans should eat it up. The film's huge list of the supporting characters made-up of familiar faces from other places outshines most of movies big name stars.

Like most prison movies this one is geared more towards the men , none of whom is a heartthrob which may set off the females :) It may also explain why this is an underrated movie. All in all I found it extremely enjoyable with hilarious scenes and dialogues (especially from Chris Rock).

Very similar to the "Big Stan", therefore the same amount of points has been given. We also have "a gay subject" here, a prison, male bonding etc. Actually, it's safe to say the Big Stan is based on this one. It would be hilarious if those two movies were one (I don't care who would play the main character) - more jokes, less viewer's time spent on similar subjects.

Better then it should've been, better then I thought it would be. But not as good as either the far superior original or even the British "Mean Machine" version. Everyone here is surprisingly good even the immensely annoying Chris Rock, plus it was nice to see Burt Reynolds in a much too small role.

I was dying for this to end by the time it was halfway over. It had a couple funny moments off the field, but all the football-playing sequences were just barely watchable. It's the kind of immature humor you should expect from an Adam Sandler movie (like how one of the players accidentally takes estrogen pills, and that makes him act like a girl) but even the dumbness is a little more reserved than usual, resulting in a movie that's not even fun to make fun of.

Mistakes - 1) When Tracy Morgan and his cheerleaders show Adam Sandler their D-I-C-K cheer - the sweat marks on Sandler's T-shirt change in all 3 shots of him. 2) When the inmates are loading the buses to go to the game, they get on that crappy school bus. But later it shows the two buses traveling to the field and no one is on the school bus.
