During the long hot summer of 1948, Dr. Faraday is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants - mother, son and daughter - are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. (imdb)

Certainly takes its time and is all the better for it. It plays wonderfully as a period drama and the horror elements are icing on top. Shows incredible restraint and proves Abrahamson more than capable in yet another genre. It's a bit ambiguous and doesn't give answers, but it leaves you with enough pieces to assemble your own interpretation and succeeds in crafting that wonderful sense of tension that the best thrillers provide.

A doctor suffering from class-based envy and resentment sees a closeted lesbian as his path to aristocracy, but his overactive super-ego inevitably leads to the "return of the repressed", as his id-projections manifest supernaturally without regard for the Hippocratic Oath. At this point, these themes and ideas are a little too familiar to contemporary audiences: there are compensations in terms of dialogue, performance and cinematography, but ultimately too few to count the film as a success.

This looks great, and the use of restraint means it doesn't run afoul of cheap tropes present in the genre, but it feels over-controlled and perhaps a bit austere. Performances are competent, but similarly shackled, and despite a decent premise it struggled, for me, to deliver any real impact. Might be worth another look.

Gothic suspense/horror film establishes its premise well and for a while the pieces seem to be in place for a good old fashioned chiller, but it all bogs down in the fairly tepid relationship between Gleeson and Wilson, squandering its terrifically creepy and interesting supporting players (Rampling and Poulter both seem to be itching for more to do). Ultimate resolution is a bit of a let-down as well. Some terrific atmosphere though, and Abrahamson proves his stylistic range with this.

Not much going on here. Competently made. Well acted, if not a little dry.

Weird no one has seen this . Good performance by the 2 leads and Rampling is pre good in what she does. The ending feels a little like jamming a puzzle piece where it don't fit but that's my only big complaint.

I liked the setting and it's decent enough to watch. Wouldn't really call it horror though. It's worth to actually follow through with the entire movie.

A country house in decline is terrorised by Domhnall Gleeson's moustache.

A decent gothic romance that comes to unexpected conclusions. Performances and set pieces were marvellous, but you'd be amiss expecting this to be horror.

Tekinsiz malikane filmi. 1 doktor, evdeki hizmetçinin rahatsızlanması sonucu malikaneye gider. Evin son durumunun kötü olduğunu görür. Evden garip sesler ve olaylar başlar. 50 li yılların korku sinemasına selam gönderen film, oyuncuların performansıyla ilerliyor. Filmin sonunda, evdeki karakterlerin mefta olmasıyla bitmesi ve açık sonla bırakılması trajik. İçi boş olan malikaneyi ben ne yapayım?

The explanation to it all, ending wise, is quite well done. A solid film for a dreary rainy day.

Of course, good ol' creepy Domhnall Gleeson is cast in a role that demands the ambiguity of a person who seems to have lost part of itself somewhere. With the cast and the mansion paying half the rent, Abrahamson then overextends the damp, downcast mystery until the tea is cold, but he frames like an old master. And listen, as silly as the twist is, it hasn't been done before.

Exquisite attention to detail and a spot on cast create an atmospheric and intriguing mystery period piece.

Thank god Will Poulter wasn't in this too much. Am I the only one who can't stand him?
