sappier than i expected from cianfrance, but then again i didn't mind that as much as i usually do. yes, there's a lot of corny shiny-happy montages, and all those voiced-over letters felt terribly like 90s melodrama...but there were also some heartfelt moments, not to mention the urge to slap vikander's character around for an indefinite time. i accredit that to good directing and performances, which shouldn't be too much of a long shot given the forces at work.

It's true that Cianfrance will probably never achieve what he did with Blue Valentine, but this is still a great film. There's some breathtaking scenes here. Also, I can't be the only one who wants to fuck Fassbender when he's in a turtleneck right?

Excellent tear-jerker, with emphasis on drama and dialogue, but with a low re-watchablity index.

eng; [the light between oceans]; ein junges paar auf einer insel mit leuchtturm erleidet zwei fehlgeburten und findet dann ein schiffbrüchiges baby, welches sie als ihr eigenes ausgegeben - was zu moralischen dilemma führt.; (bis auf das ende gut);

Very good lessons. A movie about making the right choices. Also, the music is amazing + Fassbender too, obviously :)

Again, Cianfrance doesn't seem to be playing to his strengths here, but it's a cool companion piece to The Place Beyond the Pines wrt how each generation's mistakes are passed onto the next.

not happy with the rushed ending, since the movie is over 2h long.

Great cast, good acting, very predictable script and 132 minute movie which should not be more than 90 minutes.

Exceptionally well-crafted and sensually romantic melodrama (with echoes of REBECCA and JANE EYRE) feels like a home-run for the first half (culminating in a stunning sequence on a stormy night at the lighthouse). It's a pity that the second half becomes far more concrete and literal in its storytelling, leaving behind the ambiguity for more straightforward domestic dramas. Fassbender is great, but film belongs to Vikander's emotional and deeply-felt portrait of matriarchal anguish.

It's a good thing those people live so close to the train tracks. Drunk obsessives wouldn't be able to watch them from the train otherwise. For a lurid sex thriller, it plays it fairly safe.

Derek Cianfrance makes emotionally naked films. Just think of the raw energy coursing through 2010's Blue Valentine, his drama about divorce, and 2013's The Place Beyond the Pines, a saga of fathers and sons. Watching The Light Between Oceans feels different and less spontaneous, largely owing to the sappy source material, the 2012 bestseller by M.L. Stedman.

A moving story that perhaps tries to capture too long a time frame. However the theme of what we do for the people we love adds depth to the story. Beautiful camera work and linens blowing in the wind.

Cianfrance moves even further away from what made Blue Valentine one of the best movies ever but the story here is still strong. Beautiful camera work as well and how can one not love Fassbender. Getting a tad bit sick of Vikander this year tho.

The Light Between Oceans focuses upon the healing love a woman gives a wounded man and his complete, impassioned devotion given in return. It examines a wrong choice made for the right reasons, and it chronicles the incredible joy and soul-wrenching pain that come from it. Along the way, this thoughtful story quietly ruminates on the bedrock attribute of lasting love: forgiveness. (pluggedin.com)

This marks consecutive Cianfrance films with a scope too big for its own good. Inside here there is a truly heartbreaking story, however any impactful character development or focus is muddied in a futile attempt to capture an over-arching 'full-circle' conclusion. Its really a shame because 'Blue Valentine' proved that Cianfrance works really well in tight narrative structures.
