The other Ip Man films are much better. The actor playing Ip Man here is okay, but Donnie Yen is far superior. This film was a little bland. An uninspired score and not a lot of heart to it. It did, however, contain some great and entertaining action sequences.

Decent drama about the early life of Ip Man. Plays a lot like Fist of Fury but that's not a bad thing. It was nice to see Yuen Biao getting a bigger role in a film. Dennis To did well as Ip Man although he's not the best actor in the world his martial arts skills were up to par. Sammo Hung and Suet Lam added a nice touch as did the fun cameo by Ip Chun. Louis Fan was a bit wasted but did well in the sidekick/tragic role.

Not as good as the other IP man films.

There is plenty of martial arts skill on display here, so genre fans shouldn't be disappointed in that. However, a lot of it is simply sparring, or dealing with local bullies, and there's never really that adrenaline-pumping feeling that anything's really at stake for Ip Man.

A nice watch. Better than IP Man 2. It is not clear to me tho why they choose to use actors like Sammo Hung Kam-Bo or Siu-Wong Fan in this movie as they had appeared in previous movies under different names and roles. Kinda odd. Anyways.. Nice watch regardless.
