Drama

The story, set in Kansas during the 1920's, covers less than a year in the life of a black teenager, and documents the veritable deluge of events which force him into sudden manhood. The family relationships and enmities, the fears, frustrations and ambitions of the black teenager in small-town America are explored with a strong statement about human values. Gordon Parks directed, wrote, produced and composed the music score for the film, which is based on his autobiographical novel. (imdb)

Nostalgic story, unique setting, kind of old-fashioned

In 20's Kansas, young Newt (Kyle Johnson) comes of age, while his friend Marcus (Alex Clarke) sinks into misanthropy and violence, and the two are ultimately pitted against each other. Based on director Gordon Parks' autobiographical novel, it's not that much different from a dozen other coming-of-age pieces, though its treatment of race relations is surprisingly raw. Gorgeously shot by Burnett Guffey, with excellent period detail and fine sequences...but the whole doesn't quite cohere.
