The Last Sunset

A cynical and perverse melodrama.

Viewed April 4, 2020. Extremely heated Western melodrama. Mostly good, and then a shocking twist towards the end takes it into the stratosphere.

Lots of complicated people thrown together for a cattle drive. Might be too much plot for some western fans, but not for me, I enjoyed it.

Around the halfway point this becomes one of the most boring things ever. I'm tempted to call its depiction of women among the worse of its kind, but really its just symptomatic of a script in need of some major work.

All the ingredients of a decent western but lacks a spark and real concern over the characters. For me the casting of Douglas and Hudson doesn't work - the implied battle between them isn't credible and Hudson looks too pale and ill to be either a physical threat or a leading man. Too clichéd ... more of a series of western themed scenes than a compelling story.

never a more incorrect billing

A misfire, and most of the fault lies in Dalton Trumbo's script, a mish-mash of Western cliches, simmered with a dash of Freud. Kirk Douglas looks like he's enjoying his physical self mightily, while Rock Hudson looks uncomfortable and vaguely ill throughout. The conflict between the two of them - central to the plot - is not to be believed, literally.

A fine western with a very good Dalton Trumbo screenplay.
