John Huston originally agreed to direct this, but he demanded a lot of changes to Alan Sharp's screenplay. This annoyed Scott and he used his post-Oscar clout to get Huston off the picture. Richard Fleischer stepped in and I think he does his usual admirable job of crafting a cracking little crime film. Viewed January 11, 2022. This is at its best when it's at its most minimal - long chase scenes across desolate countrysides photographed in cold tracking shots, alternating with scenes of Scott quietly brooding. The doom-and-gloom atmosphere loses its spark when the film shifts to scenes of its principal characters conversing in dark hotel rooms. The sparseness is a virtue, but the film still seems to be missing something.

Delectably written neo-noirish crime road movie. The leads are very good too.

Funky music fails to disguise the dullness of this Iberian adventure.
