A movie anchored by James McAvoy's good performance and Forest Whitaker's outstanding performance. Honestly, Whitaker's performance is one of those that meets if not exceeds the hype it has recieved. it's not that Whitaker makes a good psycho, it's that he makes a very human character. A mentally ill human, but still a human.

Whitaker was absolutely amazing, James McAvoy was also very, very good and I think credit for his performance gets forgotten because Whitaker plays such a difficult role to perfection. I loved the slow transition from the playful feel of the first part of the film to the terror filled end. It worked very, very well.

Despite the commendable performances, there is something not quite right about this fictional biopic. Technically, it's a good dramatic thriller with an often compelling portrayal of a slightly unhinged dictator and his tumultuous relationship with his doctor. But ultimately, the film itself as a whole is borderline bland and feels a little emotionally disconnected as if something essential to the story was held back which is a shame really because this could have been something.

it's a shame that forest whitaker has been in so many films, and that not a lot of them have been memorable, bc when he hits the right role he is simply incredible. he did it in Ghost Dog, and he's done it again here, as Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin. It's absolutely scary how Whitaker seemed to become Amin in this role. His eyes had that distant yet focused glaze of a real madman. funny and charming, violent and scary and sometimes only seconds apart, whitaker shines.

I don't see the fuzz around the Last King of Scotland. ... Besides Forest Withacker, this was just pretty average. ... Nothing that really makes this outstanding. For example: the stereotypical portrayal of Africa, the lack of creative camerawork, the flaws in historical accuracy. .... Mmmmmm!

A very good movie. Whitaker is just fantastic, he almost seems to be Amin., while the movie itself does a lot of effort to convey an impression of Uganda at that time - and is succesful. But I was wishing that this movie would even go a little further while showing the horror Amin was delivering to his country.

Gripping. Whitaker is perfect as Amin. The way his childishness, petulance and then finally his horrific cruelty slowly become apparent through his larger than life personality is very well done. I'm usually not especially impressed with McAvoy but here he puts in a good performance as a believably flawed character.

The one thing that stands out a mile in The Last King of Scotland is the fantastic representation of Idi Amin by Forest Whitaker. It must have taken a massive amount of preparation to perfect the role so well. The proximity of McAvoy to Amin is another highlight, the turbulent relationship between them has been pulled off to its full potential. As for the rest of the film, McAvoy plays a difficult part rather well, direction works very nicely and it maintains a great tension throughout.

Obviously holds a reconstruction of a subtextual essay put forward in the book this is based on, if only a partially effective reconstruction. It wants to say something about Africa and its corruption of the soul while also explaining and defending it, but along with the terrific acting of Whitaker this only increases the negative or stressful relationship to those formulaic elements the rest of the film is comprised of, resulting in the film feeling 'off' as a whole.

Whitaker was absolutely amazing; switching between intense, frightening and disarming so easily. I didn't mind having some white doctor be the protagonist, this way the focus isn't completely on Amin and it makes the character all the more unpredictable when he does pop up next. It's an interesting watch, but the movie doesn't really stand out apart from Whitaker.

Forest Whitaker's stellar performance is both a blessing and a curse to this movie. His presence is powerful and menacing to a point where every scene without him feels dull and - worst of all - pointless (worst offender: the contrieved love-affair... ungh...). A standout act in an otherwise unmemorable film.

Well I now know why Whitaker won the Oscar. He was awesome in the lead role. This possibly had one of the most gruesome scenes I have ever seen in a film, and what made it worse was that it kinda came out of nowhere so I wasn't even prepared for it. The film did a very good job depicting what took place during Idi Amin's reign.

In all seriousness though, it's a very powerful film filled with some great performances. Forest has come a long way from Private Garlic. Well worth the Oscar nod, and this film is well worth a look.
On a side note, if you correct someone who calls you British by saying your Scottish they do react in the way Amin does in the film ;)

Well done. Forest Whitaker belts out an Oscar-worthy performance which alone makes this movie worthy of the rating. As for the film itself: The camerawork and cinematography was a bit trendy, if not annoying at times. Many of the characters also seemed a bit underdeveloped (or maybe I just couldn't find it in me to really care about what was happening to McAvoy).

Sometimes slightly fictionalising the truth makes it come out stronger; this film is a prime example of that. This might be the best roles for both Whitaker and McAvoy; the chemistry between them is unreal. There is this authentic feel of 70s to the movie; as for Uganda it brings you to somewhere you do not know and cannot understand; instead of a bird's eye view. The way the story builds up so that we are mostly on the surface veneer and then dropped right into the boiling water is spectacular.

It's a super dark and messed up movie with an amazing cast of actors. The most powerful performance comes from Forest Whitaker. He really embodies the threat with a concerning kindness way too well. You can tell things will end up awful when they seem to be getting good for the main character and I think the journey downwards, while expected, is truly enthralling.

This is the Forest Whitaker power hour and, while the film isn’t bad or even boring, there’s little else worth drawing an audience into this. This is largely fiction with competent direction but an overall disparate approach; the modern filmmaking clashes with a heavy-handed score that you’d expect in a similar film from twenty years prior, and ultimately I think this has trouble staying focused.

I found myself more fixated on McAvoy's deepening hole of desperation than Whitaker's corrupt dictatorship, but upon reflection, it's because of Whitaker's discomfiting fluctuation between best pal and monster that McAvoy is so persuasively on pins and needles throughout. This movie is average in every way but one, Forrest Whitaker. I'm usually not a fan of movies made so the star can get an Oscar (i.e. Cast Away and others like it), but this story is important and needs to be told. I'm am however left with the feeling that had the moviemakers cast a stronger actor and personality than James "in 5 minutes you'll forget me" McAvoy this movie could have been great. McAvoy is like Rene Zellwegger, he should never be more than the funny friend in a movie.

The story progresses at a rather slow rate and then instantly picks up in the last 35 minutes. The way Kevin MacDonald made the film allowed the audience to understand Nick Garrigan, and allowed the audience to see Idi Amin all different aspects of his life. But at times, it felt as though they were dragging it out. Even through the dragged sequences you could still admire the acting talent and the emotions portrayed by both McAvoy and Whitaker. A good film. But not solid all the way through.
