It's certainly a much more well-made movie than the original, but it's also an uglier one; where Bergman and Craven both made a point of questioning just where you draw the line between defense, revenge and cold-blooded murder, that's all tossed aside here. So it just becomes an exercise in watching people get tortured for almost 2 hours, with standard horror-movie set pieces to make the violence look sleek and sexy so you can enjoy it without those pesky doubts.

I feel kind of messed up for liking this as much as I do, given some of the interactions that take place. However, I appreciate films that don't hold themselves back from what they wanna do. There are plenty of "kidnap crime thrillers" but this lends itself to more of a phycological mess. They are things in this that some people can't watch and by no means am I a fan of films that go farther then they need to. This just blends well to its unforgiving and disturbing nature.

I cannot bear all the "its not as good as the original" pomposity in film reviews .. the question is "was this a good FILM?" IMO, Yes ... tense, menacing, horrific, well acted, good action scenes, decent script and well filmed, particularly the swimming scenes. Was the rape scene difficult to watch? Of course it was, it was a rape scene for Gods sake!. This film is such a refreshing change in not ending with everyone smiling, despite everything that befalls them - its horrible, but SO satisfying

I haven't seen Wes Craven's original, but this latest 2009 version is about as effective as it ought to be. There is something very off-putting about recommending a film like this, being that it's difficult to stomach this kind of material as entertainment. I can only say that the movie is violent, hard to endure, and hits the emotional punches. As a descent into a realm of depraved characters and gratuity, this remake works absolutely on its own terms, and for that I can't fault it.

Surprisingly solid remake albeit less edgy and way less shocking than the original. Points for flashes of great cinematography - especially shifts in focus and depth staging - that rise above the average horror movie.

Technically much better and more consistent than the original but just turns into some dreadfully mediocre and dumb as hell torture schlock. Somehow there's more story but less point to it.

This is a quality horror film. It turns the formula inside out, and its only flaw is an unnecessarily long rap scene. It could've conveyed the same point with only half of the screen time. Other than that, Craven's original formula is still intact and this will keep viewers engaged from start to finish.

I'll start off by saying - the microwave scene was ABSOLUTELY necessary! It's a REVENGE FLICK people, fuck, how would you react if your daughter was raped and left for dead? The father fucking snapped, that's the point, and that scene, over the top and unrealistic as it is, was needed. The rape scene genuinely made me uncomfortable, which not a lot of flicks can manage. Apparently Dillahunt pales in comparison to his '72-flick counterpart, but he (and most of the rest of the cast) was awesome.

I haven't seen the original so I can't judge this film through that prism, but this is pretty bad. Gratuitous only for the sake of stomach-churning. It spends an unnecessary amount of time trying to methodically build dread before every violent climax, but always ends up being monotonous and ineffective. The director seems unsure of what perspective he'd like to present the events from.

It's an ok thriller. Think it has a good story and some suspense moments. But tought that either the build-up to the action was to slow , or the action was to short. Think it's the last thing. People died a bit to fast , without given a decent fight back. And the very very end ( after credits ) was way over the top. Characters and acting was good. So afterall a enjoyable movie.

The attack scene is so genuinely, viciously ugly that it sets a nasty pall – until the even more gleefully ugly and nasty revenge plot kicks in – it strains credibility and logic, but is damn satisfying, especially thanks to performances on both sides of the ledger, and Illiadis taking full advantage of his dark and stormy night setting. I really shouldn’t approve of this, especially as it blunts the original’s more honest critique of vigilantism, but sometimes the heart wants what it wants!

Why did it take 4 hours for the characters to show up on screen while another one was getting brutally attacked? It happened so many times lmao. The husband was getting pounded on while the wife was just standing outside the room for some reason, I guess? Anyway, this film is painfully uninspired and drab. They were also very keen on sexualizing those girl huh, gross.

I think it's an okay remake. It's certainly more graphic and violent, but not as disturbing without the raw, gritty old-school feel. It might just be because the original is shorter, but this one did feel a little bit too long. The second half certainly dragged. It had an interesting cast, but I don't think any of them really worked that well. It was mostly a fine movie, but doesn't work as well in this modern setting. Oh, and that very final scene was really dumb.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with this and it says I'd give it a 71 but I thought it was pretty good. There was some good tension and it was pretty suspenseful but I feel like the ending dragged a bit longer than it should have and the whole microwave scene at the end was super unnecessary. In terms of a remake though, I haven't seen the original but I guess I'll have to check it out.

TLHOTL is surprisingly half decent. I've never seen Wes Craven's original, so I had no nostalgic memories at stake here. The story telling is much to be desired but for suspense and shocks it entertains. I've always preferred suspenseful horrors over gory ones, but here the two styles are well balanced. The intensity of the violence isn't for the faint hearted and some of the set pieces are far fetched. But despite how overcrowded the horror genre has become, this is certainly worth a watch.

Surprisingly decent horror flick. Can't compare it to the original but as an entry into the modern horror genre it's a lot better than most modern franchises. There are plenty of truly uncomfortable scenes of 'torture-porn', but unlike the Saw franchise they exist to justify the film's resolution rather than being simply gratuitous. It has a nice twist in the final act that turns events on their head a bit. Enjoyable and made me want to seek out the original, which I'm guessing will be better.

The Last House on the Left is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name, which was already a remake of a Swedish film. Was this one really necessary? Not really. Is it well made? Sure. Enough intensity is captured throughout to keep things from getting boring, even if a lot of time is spent watching redundancies. The actors are strong -- Garret Dillahunt is particularly menacing -- but I still didn't care about characters thanks to poor writing. Most importantly, I wasn't scared.

Entertaining, but not as powerful as the original. I liked that they didn't water down the violence (it was probably more violent than the original), but it wasn't as personal and effective (for example; the rape scene. The original one [one of my favourite rape scenes] focused purely on the victim's face and we had no choice but to sit and suffer with her. This one was much more showy, but kept us at a distance from the victim). The ending was stupid as well.

Some seriously sloppy storytelling hidden under a blanket of decent direction and above-average acting. A lot of subplots are left abandoned, and you never get the feeling that the parents are devastated enough to be overtaken with feelings of revenge...which is why the final scene before the credits seemed so out of place. It has nothing to do with the instrument used.

It was, surprisingly, very good. A bit too explicit for my taste, but you can't fault that given that the movie is playing to your vengeful side. The music choices were brilliant and they put in a lot of effort into the cinematography too. Last part was a bit of a drag, but all in all it is a good horror movie. Because real life psychos are way freakier than any supernatural being, any day any time.

Was thinking about leaving the theater during the rape scene because it was so awful to witness, but I think the parents gave those bastards the best revenge that they could have possibly received (not that any revenge could ever give the girl back what she lost.) Her friend was stupid, but didn't deserve what happened to her either. I still don't know how she could have ended up on her parents doorstep after all of that+the shot in the back, but I'm glad she did.

Iliadis's Craven/Cunningham-approved remake is tense, extremely well-crafted and suspenseful although of course that comes with a heavy load. The violence is not as harsh as some people makes it out to be but the dread is cranked awfully high. Not having seen Craven's original, I'd dare say this is very worthy remake and Illiadis choreographs it all with a sure (and chilling) hand. The performances are very good and John Murphy's elegiac score aims for compassion. But death by microwave, really?

The original was a piece of pseudo-snuff exploitation so it's not like this remake has big shoes to fill. What this does better is setup the plot which leads to the inevitable turn of events. Unfortunately, this film is full of typical Hollywood characters so you know exactly where things will lead once the "vengeance" part of the story kicks off. It's completely uninspired movie making but still adequately suspenseful at times if you manage to turn off your brain while viewing.

What really makes the original word was how much of an effect it had on peoples minds. I didn't see the older version until recently and many people who were older than me told me about the effect of the older version. They were right. Disturbing. Well this movie has some of those disturbing moments, but doesn't have the effect of the original. It didn't make me for uncomfortable to watch except for one scene. The revenge aspect was way too short and the build up was rather slow.

Hard time reviewing this one. on one hand, there were some super fun elements and good setup to the suspense. However, some of that setup did go over the top, and I still hate the fake "made you jump just to make you jump" parts. I guess those don't work on me. I DID love the "bad guys", especially the girl character. The story is good, but not crazy compelling. This movie is just a little better than average for me. It's better than most remakes.

I stopped seeing this as a horror flick and more as a revenge flick. That's not to say that there wasn't some suspense because there was, and there was some decent horror because of that. This movie doesn't rely on cheap jump scare tactics nearly as much as a lot of modern movies. It's not really that scary in general but it's an entertaining flick that has some OH HELL YES moments. A bit of surprise for me.

Barring the final 1 minute of "Last House on the Left" (which was stupid, unnecessary and way over the top), I really enjoyed this movie. In my opinion, the "disturbing" rape scene everyone is talking about is way overblown. Admittedly, the scene in its entirety WAS disturbing, however the violence that preceded the rape was painful to watch (since it was so realistic)--not the depicted rape itself. Furthermore, the entire movie hinged upon the effectiveness of this scene. Solid horror film.

Crap. This movies' crap start to finish. If only the revenge part had been a bit creative, hitting one of the perps with a wine bottle and shoving his hand up a drain hardly qualifies as gruesome. But what really pissed me off was the way the soon-to-be-abused girl was lovingly shown taking a shower and how the camera followed her curves, considering her soon to be dished out on-screen fate, WTF, is it like rape porn now? Not recommended.

Hollywood got close on this one, but not close enough, they need to learn people don't want to watch bad guys rape innocent girls, this isn't WE, they don't want to watch kidnapping and crying victims. What we want is cold, brutal, mutilating, justice--this is where this movie got so close, but it is missing one crucial part they need to beg, beg, beg--and after be tortured for at least twenty minutes of screen time, but as it stands, it's an average flick.

Let's be honest and say that by every objective measure this is a better film than the aged-like-fine-milk original - which doesn't necessarily make it great. But it does mostly succeed as a harrowing and violent experience, though the vengeance half of the film does get a little tedious at points and the very final moment before the end credits obliterates even the most generous suspension of disbelief.

There's good and bad to this. The overall plot is pretty predictable, as are the "scares", but there are some social issues that I thought were really interesting that made up for this. I think if it were a bit more graphic it could have driven home its message a little more clearly and also I wish the ending was a bit darker.
