A mismarketed, modern day masterpiece from one of the best filmmakers ever. I loved seeing the different POVs. That was handled expertly from Scott’s end and the three writers as well. The few action scenes are extremely exciting and the title sequence is the very definition of nail-biting. Jodie Comer is excellent and should get an Oscar for this one. I didn’t have any issues with the pacing likes others seemed to. Go see this movie before forming your own opinion about it. It’s great.

Despite the repetition in the film, each part had enough of something new to keep me intrigued the whole time. Damon and Driver are great, but Comer is really the best part. I think the writing is fantastic in how it shows how our memories can be clouded by our own bias, especially with its different perspectives. My only problems are having to watch the rape scene twice, though that was probably necessary for the third perspective, and that its slower pace leads to a very long run time.

Not sure what the triptych approach adds to the story since no chapter explores the validity of Marguerite's accusation any differently. As a result, there is little complexity or ambiguity to be found in its timely analysis of gender and power dynamics, but I will admit it's a film which lends itself incredibly easily to discussion and is perhaps the most watchable, not cringe-inducing film Ridley has done since American Gangster.

A very nice discussion on whose stories get told and how and how that hasn't changed in 800 years. I like how on the nose it is in this context and the reactions online show that people still don't get it. The linkage between the male gaze in history and art works very well in this lean, vital, clear-minded afford by a never bad Ridley Scott. "Well behaved women rarely make history" is the most misunderstood line maybe ever. And we're finally articulating that.

Finally got around to seeing this, unfortunately not in the cinema, as should be mandatory for any new Scott historical drama, but even on the TV, there's no denying that the old man is the master of believable historical Mis-en-scene . As for the actual story, it manages to take a very relevant modern issue and seamlessly create an engaging multifaceted medieval tale, that skewers the idea of chivalry quite elegantly.

I'm honestly amazed this movie didn't perform better considering the cast and director, though the marketing wasn't exactly faithful. Jodie Comer is a marvel, and further proves her versatility and skill with every devastating scene. I really liked the storytelling aspects of the same story told from 3 different perspectives. You can tell a lot of thought and care went into how they told this, and I love that. If you can stomach this, definitely give It a watch. I give 9 Adam Drivers out of 10.

The Last Duel was truly incredible. It was irritating, frustrating, and absolutely epic. This terrible tragedy, which is told through three perspectives with a character focus, reaches a near-perfect narrative under the leadership of Ridley Scott. The actor performances are excellent. The Last Duel brings a lot to the table to really delve into. It’s story structure is very interesting, and works really well given the arch’s that this film tries to tell. The performances from Damon, Driver, Comer, and Affleck are quite good, and ultimately carry the film being that this is light on lots of big spectacle moments. It’s pacing does hurt this a bit though, as it feels a little too long, but it does need it at the same time. So I feel at a crossroads, yet also satisfied.

It went like this, but this guy saw it differently and this other guy saw it differently as well. I was done with this before the last duel and I think the movie would've been fine without it. Did it matter who won? Was there a strong contingent of people that were vocally expressing that they thought women had it great in the Middle Ages? Cause this one PROVES 'em wrong. Matt Damon looks haggard and while Adam Driver might be a master, the he's drop dead gorgeous angle is lost on me.

Scott likes to think that the cause of this movie festering in the box office is that us damned participation award wielding, avacado toast eating millennials just don't care about learning things. Well, is it that we don't want to be taught, or that you don't have anything here worth hearing? Go ahead and make me another Alien, or Blade Runner, or Black Hawk Down, or Legend, or even 1492, and then I'll be listening.

Having given up on Ridley Scott for 10+ years, he comes out with this fantastic medieval Rashomon-style perspective piece that is not that far off the quality of his early heyday. Driver is great as usual, but it's Damon & Affleck who surprised me as much as Scott - I usually can't see past their real life selves besides a couple of other movies, and here they give excellent performances (easily Affleck's best while dressed up as ridiculously as Zorg in the Fifth Element). Comer is phenomenal.

We should believe victims. While the elder filmmaker is not known for his particularly deft handling of delicate topics, this film does it in spades. The marketing for this was horrible, as it is essentially over two hours of politicking and 15 minutes of dueling. Don't get me wrong, that duel rocks, but the meat of this is in the stellar performances of the principle cast. A blonde Affleck almost steals the show, but Comer is flat out amazing. This is great.

A masterful final chapter subverts and fulfills its awkwardly paced predecessors with appreciable depth and breadth. Jodie Comer is subtly magnificent, everyone else is unsure about whether to put on an English accent or not. While the grandness of the climactic duel sort of contradicts the point, it is spectacular - and it is the title, after all. Quite good.

Illustrates wonderfully how the human memory works on a biased fallacy. Our own subjective truth is never quite the whole truth despite our firm and honest belief in our own impeccability. Last third is a grotesque reminder how twisted our perception of reality can become when shrouded by selfish motives and disregard of the truths of others.

Living back then sucked. It's almost melodramatic the way the stories are presented with mirrored mentors, men, and their common bond through Comer. While the duel was well done, I was far more interested in the first 2/3 of the film when we're introduced to the characters and to the world. I went into this blind so I didn't know about the different POVs and was wondering why there were gaps in the first act. Fav scenes: nobody else caring every time Damon swore fealty or got knighted.

The screenplay and direction are merely functional, failing to illuminate anything that isn’t already obvious about misogyny in the 14th century (and its modern day parallels) over the course of its gratuitous 2.5 hour runtime. Granted, the titular duel is pretty riveting with more tension, surprise, and dynamic variation than the rest of the film in its entirety. For those ten minutes, The Last Duel roars to life. The rest is handsomely perfunctory.

A really precise script brought to life by terrific performances, direction, and editing. I loved the subtleness of some of the differences in the perspectives. A little dialogue that was too on the nose or overly anachronistic. But damn, as a character study and just as an examination of gender attitudes, this is superb. The truth of The Last Duel isn't historically concrete, so the film employs a difference of perspectives to mixed effect. In Damon's act the world is bleak & he himself is a martyr. Driver's POV presents himself as benevolent & deserving. Comer's portrayal is quieter, pairing her seemingly good nature with an undertone of vengeful wiles. Affleck & Damon's mother are the real villains. Very good performances, but a slow and repetitive film that views the events through an incongruent modern lens.

Scott seems like the most humorless blowhard director on steady autopilot until a real live black stallion tries to mount a mare, at which point this dour procedural turns into high comedy. I suspected before that he doesn’t seem much involved in this film or its sexual politics, his mind maybe on Gucci or his past or his wine. Or maybe that was my mind doing these things. In any case, who did what to whom with these Sirs and Miladys is murky, unpleasant and until the duel without intrigue.

There are a few revelations in each of the 3 different POVs but they stretch themselves thin as a whole. We essentially know the truth of the event from the first one, and the writers made sure to point out what the truth is just in case. A lack of meat on the bone. Mediocre plotting, a long runtime does not make a film epic... you have to earn it. It sucks because there are genuinely great moments sprinkled in here and good acting all around. The actual duel was tense and awesome.

It's incredible the amount of talent being wasted in this incompetent film. It takes Rashomon, strips it of its essential various differing perspectives, yet still maintains Marguerite's chapter is "The truth", despite each chapter showing the events the same. So we get to see the same boring, dull, offensively stupid story three times over -- fucking hooray. Also features cinematography too drab and ugly for its own good and some laughably terrible writing and acting for this time period.

It took me a while to tune into its wavelength. Some of the dialogue is cheesy, the acting hammy - Matt and Ben are shameless, but Alex Lawther’s camp king deserves note here too. The hair and makeup teams had a field day and the action is brutal. But ultimately I enjoyed this, for all its excessive overlength. Not sure why Ridley Scott thought Millennials didn’t like this, it’s not really all that slow, and the only thing that’ll deter anyone is how unlikable the characters are, which is common for movies set in this age. The direction is good, action (while brief) is excellent, and the performances are great, with Comer being a standout. The only thing for me is two of the perspectives are very similar in one scene. Yes, one is worse, but it’s not exactly a revelation about the character. Great.

I was shaking throughout the entirety of the titular duel. However, I didn't like how "The truth" hangs an extra second when introducing Marguerite's chapter: up to this point the movie lets the viewer decide where the truth lies, but I guess Affleck and Damon couldn't keep their leftism in their metaphorical pants, lest anyone doubt how feminist they are or take away the wrong message. Coincidentally, I agree that it was "The truth" but still, why are Hollywood actors such cowards?

Superbly acted, elaborate costumes, & gorgeously filmed, the Last Duel has all the makings of a medieval epic. But a repetitive retelling of events that often adds little for the first two chapters comes off more clunky than clever. Worse yet, the movie lose coherency in the 3rd chapter. This is especially sad for a movie that has some very poignant scenes in respect to some difficult subjects. Sadly, it's hard to ignore the blatant & egregious vilification of the historical figure of Carrouges.

Harry Gregson-Williams does a good Vangelis. The movie suffers a little from trying to hammer home its point too much, in an oddly anachronistic way. Unnecessarily so. Especially if it comes at the cost of her character's integrity (which it sadly does at the end). And especially not coming from a movie that has her call out hypocrisy while at the same time exploiting her struggle for suspense. So that what the guys do is more exciting for us. So we can have our little death. :>

A very fine film. Comer is especially great in her role. The Rashomon style telling is interesting, though I couldn't help but feel more could have been done with this. Driver's memory of the central event should have probably been more favorable toward him playing by the film's rules, as he seemed to legitimately believe himself innocent. I can understand the desire not to confuse the piece into a question of "who is lying?", though, and this might have ultimately been the right choice.

There's a good kernel in here of how old the terrible treatment of rape survivors is, and there are some pretty extraordinary action scenes. However, the three different points of view show only very subtle differences in their accounts of what happened, and perhaps most tellingly the central rape is functionally identical. It makes Le Gris' actions seem pretty delusional. Also there are several quite jarring edits that feel like they may have been rushed to keep the running time down.

It's not without its merits on screen either, but it just becomes too repetitive to watch, especially with characters as unlikable as this doing the same things over and over again. Fine. What's really disappointing is that the whole movie is just a thin allegory for an eye-rollingly bland take on contemporary politics. The shots of the rabid crowd at the end make me wonder if Scott originally imagined a more interesting film. If he did, he chickened out. This film would have been so much more effective with proper casting.Matt Damon and,to a lesser extent,Adam Driver are just not fit for these roles.Surprisingly,Ben Affleck was quite comfortable in his role. The multiple perspectives in the engaging narrative are a powerful tool implemented quite successfully, but eventually made completely obsolete in mere seconds by revealing that the woman's perspective is the actual truth. This manages to ruin the whole with typical Hollywood PC preaching (-10)

It amazes how I end up NEARLY liking a Ridley Scott film everytime since I don't know when. Pretty bloated and redundant as usual, but the cast is pretty good. Anyway, as engaging as dramatically inert.

The RASHOMON-lite structure is more of a gimmick than anything, but Scott knows his way around a historical epic.

I like the characters. I like the actors. I like the setting. I like the plot. I like the costumes. Buuut… [SPOILERS] How the hell are you going to make an alternate perspective movie when there’s no damn difference in the perspectives! The result is a long-winded, repetitive, boring movie. It’s masturbation. And the lousy lame ending is the cherry on top… C-

With the heavy and trodding pace it took a while before I got into the mood of it. Wasn't until it went full Rashômon I really started loving the thing. From a already dark start, it just kept getting uglier and uglier, and it was a rather delightful seeing aging Hollywood heartthrobs in this kind of scenario.

enjoyable film all around. brilliant direction, great cinematography, a solid script, excellent performances... started watching it expecting camp pleasure but stayed for unexpectedly decent storytelling. it's not surprising to see ridley scott still has it but here his temperament in his recent films coincides so well with the script's balance of seriousness/blandness/pop-tendencies. and kudos to ben affleck for being the complete opposite of brad pitt in his approach to casting himself.

W4E1P2S2V2M1A1R2. Very good story, well told, with some good battle scenes to lure the men who need to see this movie into the theater. I see some complaining of how close the 3 perspectives are, rendering it boring, but that's what impressed me the most. The accents struck me as terrible, though I may have missed something about how they figured into the narrative, given that the actors are all playing somewhat against type too, which may be part of the point.

I thought I was over Ridley Scott historical epics, I was wrong. A great cast supporting an amazing attention to detail in Scott's medieval world building. Fantastic exploration of misogyny and toxic masculinity.

Although all chapters are practically the same, Ridley Scott never ceases to amaze us, at this age. Incredibly well done, as always. I like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s scripts, I like this one too but I think the movie would be much better if the truth wasn’t decided by the script. For example, if Le Gris’ part reflected his claims. That being said, the script is still very good.

Loved the Rashomon-style storytelling. Some of the dialogue was a little... off to me. Solid acting from the whole cast with a standout performance by Jodie Comer. Someone to keep an eye on.

editing could be better but having 3 different perspectives is a fresh take in a historical movie

Jean de Carrouges is Matt Damon with a mullet, and it doesn't help matters that both Adam Driver and Jodie Comer act circles around him (and I'm usually a Damon fan). Scott as usual had great direction and immaculate set design/costumes. The three different perspectives made for an interesting take, but at the cost of some story and world building. There are some tough themes and scenes, but ultimately it's worth watching. Though if you don't like violence and gore you might need to reconsider.

A bore. I think it wants to be relevant, and to contribute to the conversation, but it isn't and it doesn't. It marginalizes the very rape victim it purports to champion, and its gesture toward "Rashomon" is empty and pitiful. Flimsy though the film may be, Adam Driver still manages to be out of his depth.

A directorial triumph for Scott: beautifully filmed, with a vivid sense of time and place, and aided by the performers; kudos to Damon for taking the most unlikable character in every iteration (at least Driver is a superficially dashing lead) and to Comer, who plays the greatest range. If the three chapter format doesn't work (the first two parts are basically interchangeable, with the third an often heavy handed attempt to bring "closure" from a modern perspective) it's still mostly enjoyable.
