The Last Days of Pompeii

Early Italian feature that manages to tug at your heart strings through its little tragic love story as well as awe audiences of its time with its size and spectacle. The disaster movie setting of "The Last Days of Pompeii" acts only as the final set piece for our characters' tale. However, the actors performances make the character's drama surprisingly engaging so when the disaster eventually hits you are actually kind of invested in the characters' fate.

A bit slow and dry, but still has the heart in the right place. The arena scenes have an impressive amount of extras, and once Vesuvius erupted the atmosphere of fear and panic is just right. The effects are painfully simple, the story quite basic, but I liked the experience as a whole nonetheless.

Interesting to see a blind woman protagonist, even if the scrip isn’t exactly great. Although I did enjoyed when she tricked Sosia, definitely the last 15 minutes of the movie are the best, with that honestly impressive disaster sequence, the movie in general has a bigger production values that what I was expecting. Overall, notable for its age, and that´s about it
