The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun

A beautiful, stylish, and well made film with a plot that's too hard to swallow

An enchanting and cool murderous daze. The big reveal was a bit of a let-down, but otherwise the style, the girl and ambiance made sure my eyes never left the screen!

A very stylish film which for a long time has the luxuriant feel of a music video starring a supermodel. The cinematography, mise-en-scene and "talent" are certainly something to look at. But as the film winds its way through various genres - mystery, road movie, absurdist, crime - never settling down, we begin to feel that the director is a vain one-trick pony, with no hope of a fitting finale. And indeed, he stuffs it all up horribly with a plot twist that stinks worse than a French sewer.

I guess I was supposed to like this because it is French, I am an academic in the humanities, and it's artsy in its cinematography and editing. Whoops. Too talky and predictable for me. And I feel this way even though a comic book guy directed it (hence the panels).

The story and certain character decisions prevent this from being better, but certainly lots of style and intrigue to make it enjoyable.

Up until the end this is a wonderfully surreal experience with flawless style and perfect pace and atmosphere. Unfortunately the end is a complete dud and explaining the mystery (and the explanation turns out to be the most boring one possible) was a huge mistake. Nonetheless, I loved it.
