A talky romance movie that doesn't follow any beaten path, hinting at mismatch and dysfunction through a procession of small and intimate moments, and eventually takes a trajectorial shape that ties it up nicely. Its exposition of the relationship dynamic shows a gentle touch, devoid of loud drama. The dialogue never really soars above serviceability though, and Beneyton's acting is shaky as is some of the supporting cast.

For some reason, I believed going in that this was a period drama, rather than a very serious, melancholy study of a shy, lonely young woman cautiously entering her first love affair. A portrait of a lonely soul that engages the viewer by it's authenticity and a stellar performance from Huppert.

A simple and then again touchingly strong story about silent but devoted love. Isabelle Huppert was stunning. The end saved much of otherwise calm storytelling.

A subtle, meditative character study with Huppert at the peak of her craft.
