The King's Daughter

Comes so close at times to fulfilling the promise of its offbeat premise (17th-century Versailles + mermaids), and I love the massive practical sets and on-location filming. But the storytelling is passable at best and the performances lean more toward cringe than camp.

While it has some redeeming qualities, such as the performances of some actors and the excellent scenery, the film's many faults, from its dated feel to the terrible special effects, make it difficult to recommend to anyone but the most devoted fantasy adventure fans.

2021 and 2022 are not good movie years for Pierce Brosnan and this is the absolute bottom. I hated every single aspect of this abomination. To summarize it in one word - it is insufferable.

The King's Daughter misses the charm that makes other fantasy adaptations (i.e. Stardust) work. The title gives away a plot twist that the film tries to develop as the 1st act. What remains is an idiosyncratic period piece with flawed casting (even if the performances are decent), that has mermaids to seemingly justify the Chinese money that the producers evidently took. I haven't read the novel, but nevertheless this stands on its own as a poor film that is neither entertaining nor interesting.
