This is the kind of pacing that can work fine onstage, but turns what could otherwise have been a really good film into a dreary mess. I generally am not a fan of Rodgers and Hammerstein, but unlike the Rodgers and Hammerstein shows I really detest, this has a few likable songs - some of which definitely benefit from Yul Brynner's marvelous performance. But the pacing is just really a problem, and the movie can't overcome the five-minute sequences of walking and standing and sitting and talking.

It's pretty hard not to compare this to The Sound of Music (1965), with its very similar story. However, this is nowhere near as good, in my opinion. The songs just aren't all that good or memorable, and the characters aren't as developed or interesting. The Siam setting seemed stereotypical and shallow too. It was nice enough though, I guess. Deborah Kerr was lovely and Yul Brynner was a lot of fun. The highlight was definitely "Small House of Uncle Thomas".

Sure, the perspective is insensitive, and a lot of the aspects are indefensibly offensive, but this is Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr at their damn finest.

Brynner and Kerr are enjoyable enough, but sadly their interactions, despite being central to the film, probably only amount to 20-30 minutes of screen time. The rest is forgettable songs, an overdone story and a slew of embarrassing stereotypes. It's not worth it.

I found it slow. The simmering romantic tension between the King and the tutor is essentially all there is to the story, and it is an unnatural dynamic because clearly the woman won't want to end up as wife #85, or whatever it is, so a romance automatically can't go anywhere.

Visually pretty in places, but just about everything else in this picture is mundane and lackluster, none of it leaves any real impact. Don't even get me started on the obscenely offensive stereotyping incorporated throughout.

This is one of those "classic" films that I just didn't really like. It was too long, the musical numbers weren't memorable, the "Uncle Tom" play was way, way too long and Anna was completely unlikable. Brynner was pretty good and some of the sets were nice so there's that I guess.

It's very hard to watch this without ignoring the racism in every aspect of the movie, from the casting, the appearances, the accents, the grammar, and even the plot, while being quite aware of American slavery. Aside from racism, this film features the King with his hands on his hips, long drawn out dialogue between songs, unnatural chemistry, mostly so-so songs, identical sets, and boring characters. Fav scene: Getting to Know You, though Small House of Uncle Thomas comes close.

I see why it's a classic and popular. I enjoyed it. Didn't love it but enjoyed it. Some of the scenes are really good some miss the mark.
