A remarkable sense of tension envelopes the entire film. A powerhouse core performance has me smelling a best lead actress snub a mile off.

Gyllenhaal gave her defining performance here. Even from the first glimpse, she mesmerizes you and you just feel something is wrong. Amazing performance. A really good script and very well directed film just rounds it all up into a devastating and destroying experience. I hate it when I can't decide to love or hate a character because I understand and also don't think what they do is right.. Perfect blend, unsetteling.

The entire tragic story could've been avoided if somebody had just bought this lady a cat. Possibly true for the vast majority of movies.

Gyllenhaal is bewitching in The Kindergarten Teacher, though the film's perspective makes for a perplexing conundrum. The film writes poetry as if it's a noble goal or a mark of excellence, though its visual portrayal is one of pretentious pretenders. Gyllenhaal's character isn't unlikable or unsympathetic because she kidnaps a child, but because of her desire for intellectual companionship, talent by proxy, and a legacy during her mild mid-life crises; thus comedic notes accompany her downfall.

I had to keep grabbing my phone during this because I was physically uncomfortable.

Thanks to its stellar script and star, it masterfully builds tension and slowly amps up the creepiness from the most subtly discomforting of moments to the downright disturbing third act (Lisa's initially puzzling choice to let Jimmy read his poems being the only blip along the way). She's a fascinating character, wonderfully nuanced (see her kind of helping Jimmy at the end) and naturally developed (the smartly written supporting characters really help here). The sparse score was a great touch.

I get it's supposed to be uncomfortable and creepy but it was so cringeworthy for me, I couldn't even finish it. Maggie Gyllenhaal is tremendous however character made it impossible to like her. I can't watch it again. I can't. Sorry.

A slow-burn, horribly uncomfortable film that was so compelling I had to come back and finish it. Gyllenhaal sells a practically unsellable character.

I really like the characters which you can't decide whether you support or not. The love that teacher feels towards the child, for example, is it motherly or is it lunatic? a kind of movie that you keep thinking about even after hours.

Missed the mark for me. Found it to be boring, melodramatic and not well-written. I think Maggie Gyllenhaal was good but her character lacked dimension… D+

The line is crossed so softly and silently that one barely notices being on the other side. But once on the other side, it is clear that therei is no going back. Fortunately this little's boy;s inteligence is not restrricted to his poetry,

I've always admired Maggie Gyllenhaal who sadly seems to get a lot less interesting roles than her brother. This is one of her finest and she does a great job with it. The film has an unique mood and it kept me interested to the end. Topic is a bit tricky and the filmmakers have been very careful to avoid any misinterpretations. It was also interesting to see the American kindergarten system as opposed to European ones. Ending was a bit predictable and not as strong as the preceding film.

rvw. she quickly got too weird with him. and you see it's selfish and vicarious etc her own self and fam disappointments. then she gets even weirder and kidnaps and leads to another worse kidnapping lool. but that ending and her finally breaking down, it really capped the movie and her performance and made both those things seem better, especially like they would be on a repeat viewing. cuz i was gonna give it a 61 until that point. it just wasnt enough cuz the rest has a lot of meh

A timely film on the killing of purity. Where it is precisely Lisa's internal rebellion of the "perverted" ideology surrounding her that becomes the primary cause of the perversion itself. The final shot is soul-crushing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is very good, tone is creepy, and no complaints about direction. It could have used more time to develop her character's internal motivation. She does things (without getting into spoilers) that imply she's truly being helpful towards the child, but the movie also tries too hint there are personal reasons beyond being nurturing, but I think this avenue wasn't explored enough. Overall, a good movie with a great performance, but just missing enough edge and development.

A very strange but ultimately powerful film that meditates heavily on our culture's treatment of child talent and asks how we should handle it in a healthy way. The best performance I've seen from Gyllenhaal in a while.
