Reuniting Keach and Tyrrell seems to have been the last good idea the filmmakers had. Lou's background is sanitized and fatally simplified for some obscure nonsense in fragmented flashbacks set to ersatz Herrmann with frequent close-ups of a dripping faucet. The approach in general to Thompson's slippery sense of tone and character was apparently to chuck a bunch of different kinds of bad music at the screen. Grimly funny update: Lou reads Games People Play instead of Psychopathia Sexualis.

Unimpressive and implausible psychological study of a man's disintegration, lacking the sleazy authenticity of the novel.
