The Island of Dr. Moreau

Considerably worse than I remembered it being. There are some interesting new variations on the material here, but the 1932 version is so much better. Somehow, the creature makeups turned out *worse* than they did 45 years ago, there's clearly a big Final Shocking Reveal that must have been cut because the producers wanted a happy ending, and the music score, quite plainly, sucks. I felt like I was watching the elementary school pageant version of _Island of Lost Souls_

Island of Lost Souls is much creepier - especially the romantic plotline. This isn't bad on its own. but not good either. It looks pretty & there's a late moment of chilling body horror & alot of impressive human vs animal fights, but for much of the film, we never feel the protagonist is truly in danger (although he runs away at any hint of risk). Moreau's experiments also don't match his stated agenda. Parts of the film also seem missing: how does Moreau feel about York & Carrera hooking up?

It has potential, but everything from the sets to the special effects comes up short, making it watchable, but nothing special.

Meandering. Lacks the sharp edge of Lost Souls. I usually love Burt Lancaster, but he's out of his range here like Peck as Ahab.

Michael York runs, fights, sleeps, rinses, lathers and repeats throughout the movie and is free from the restraints of any character. He just runs, fights and sleeps, over and over. Considering the material and the cast they had to work with, this is pretty disappointing.

the struggle with the bad makeup lessens this a bit and only reminds the viewer endlessly how cheesy that take is. Also, hot damn, that borderline abuse of real live animals, throwing some through roofs and walls, even with cushioning, you can tell this was not necessary

This may be my favorite movie version of HG Wells' classic.
