Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones are wonderful in their portrayal of the secret love life of Charles Dickens. The movie was somewhat underwhelming, but the acting was mostly superb. The intricate details were entertaining but not altogether engaging, having such roots in old world, outdated sensibilities. A good history lesson, and a few memorable 19th century scenes are recreated.

I didn't care much for Ralph Fiennes' unconventional but gimmicky first feature. This sophomore effort is a decidedly more traditional affair, it being a period drama and all, and yet it ends up being the better work by a mile. This gorgeously mounted piece is a mostly incisive exploration of the nature of identity and compromise in a restrictive social atmosphere and it features a restrained and quietly arresting turn from Felicity Jones.

Impeccably designed and acted but still somewhat of a bore.

great cinematography and some good acting brutally killed by the terrible script and incoherent storytelling that focuses on all the wrong angles possible...

Despite the acting and output shines, the story between two lovers suffers for wrong emphasis. The director focused on difficulties for the time, but when they finally find each other he skipped the period too quick and the film there for stuck to the costume drama.

A little bland, it didn't evoke much empathy for the maim protagonists but it takes a quite interesting wider look at the (lack of) choices available to woman at that time.

It takes a willfully post-modern sensibility to ask an audience 2 sympathize w/ the plight of The Other Woman when - Dickens' prose 2 the contrary - she seems 2 offer little more than looks & mostly avoids the censure dictated by the social contract. The idea's particularly nuts in the wake of watching the emotional turmoil wreaked on the wife & family. There's great cinematography & acting here, but though it offers context & understanding of the protagonist, it's too hard 2 feel sorry for her.

Is The Invisible Woman a good or bad film? Can it be both? It has many moments of strength, but its central premise -- a romance between two real people we don't know much about -- doesn't have any power behind it, meaning the film as a whole is going to suffer. There are points of great acting, but the repressed nature of the romance hinders any impact it can have. The Invisible Woman blends in with the rest of the pack and is only really worth seeing if you absolutely love costume dramas.
