A general vehicle for Kaye's stage acts, which don't translate well to the screen. A few gags are inspired, the rest seems a waste of his talent and your time.

Danny Kaye's benevolent version of Rufus T. Firefly.

I've come to the conclusion that Danny Kaye is all the Ritz Brothers morphed into one. Wild, nutty and so broad that it's often impossible to keep the comedy refined. After a string of good comedies post-WWII, some of my favorites from that era Hollywood, comes a mediocre one. Got its fun moments, and Kaye himself works hard to make it such. But there was nobody else stepping up or someone to play off of. Became too much Kaye, with stretches that wasn't that eventful.

Not a great movie, but worth it for the wild musical sequences

While the setting remains European, stylistically this is a thoroughly Americanized version of Gogol's "Revizor", with Danny Kaye doing fancy song numbers and shredding a violin when he's not hamming up the part of a bumbling oaf. Inconsistent, with most of the humor falling flat despite some standout lines here and there.

Dull comedy comes to sluggish life during Kaye's hilarious word-play songs, but pacing issues, and a supporting cast seemingly intent on selling it's second-rate material to within an inch of its life ultimately helps the movie fizzle.

Er man i et særligt humør, kan fjollede Kaye være morsom.

This is not the best Danny Kaye film, but it is perfectly serviceable.
