They don't know yet. They're innocent of both good and evil. They're just finding out what they CAN do.. The world doesn't make sense; they've all seen things that are just plain wrong. How can you make decisions when you don't know what a consequence even is? "What do you do when you know someone is bad?" "You ask an adult." "But what if you're an adult?" They're just playing, but the world doesn't have do-overs. Damn, this one got to me.

Vogt's film is about childhood, the developmental period of morality: concepts like good&evil; innocence&crime; living&dead... His film shows us that there is zero moral value in not being mean, not hurting others when you're just weak, harmless and naive. The "supernatural", the moral value in "being nice" only comes from the well integrated and controlled inner evil. The capacity to do harm, to hurt others but only choosing to do so when it's absolutely necessary...that's the real superpower.

Similar to Chronicle (2012) in both tone and message, although this one lacks an origin story entirely. Unnecessary animal cruelty scene.

Maybe there is a really good movie somewhere here beyond the collection of austere imagery -- although some moments are really striking, despite the inclination for 'wow look how I'm gonna make this EVEN more evil than it seems with just this one perfect shot'. Cast is terrific.

It's good with some shocking moments but needed something more to stand out, maybe a stronger actor for the boy antagonist? Also possibly a me problem as I had pretty high expectations.

It's rare enough to find a single good child performance let alone four of them in the same movie. The Innocents is at its best early on when it's hard to pin down exactly what kind of story you're watching (as long as you go in blind like I did). Once all of its cards are on the table, it starts running out of steam a bit, and I wasn't as invested by the end. The third act was a bit too tame and felt like it really took its sweet time wrapping things up before fizzling out in an unexciting way

I'm not sure that I picked up on exactly what The Innocents was going for, and it was a tough watch overall, but unique, troubled, and worth a viewing. Cats only have two lives, chugged along as a super hero/villain origin story, the cast of creepy child actors was the star.

Overall, "The Innocents" is a foreboding and captivating film, showcasing exceptional child performances and an acute understanding of the behavior of children. Despite its dark tone, the film offers a unique perspective on supernatural powers and their effects on young lives.

A superhero film for the arthouse crowd rather than the mainstream, I suppose. But this is more fun and relatable than the usual capeshit, with these kids actually engaging with their powers in different ways that shows their different moral compasses. A little slight and tedious at times, but still a refreshing take on superpowers, particularly from a realistic kids' perspective.

Excellent moods and stellar kid cast. Goes a bit overboard with the evil, but still works.

Vogt's latest film operates in the hypersensitive emotional frequency of childhood. About small worlds created by shared innocent curiosity, both silly and morbid. It finds its horror in the divide between the rationality of child and adult - creating moments of absolute dread for the audience. I think Vogt's execution deserves a higher score but the movie so thoroughly bummed me out from start to finish.

Vogt borrows a title from Jack Clayton’s 1961 adaptation of The Turn of the Screw abut he owes an even deeper debt to Theodore Sturgeon’s 1953 More Than Human, which considers the implications of the emergence of a new generation of superhumanly gifted beings. Working with an unusually gifted central quartet of young actors, Vogt’s restrained, patient style creates a sense of unease from the opening shot final image, which answers some questions about what’s come before but raises even more.

I decided, quite uncharacteristically, to fight my instinct and give this movie a chance, but alas it turned out to be exactly what I feared: an atmospheric, *very* slow burner with little plot or substance. Would've been great with a faster pace, a stronger first half and a shorter runtime. The kids' acting is excellent though and the last 40 minutes are great, had me spooked and on the edge of my seat. Reminded me of von Trier's Riget.
