The Indian in the Cupboard
1995
Family/Kids, Fantasy
1h 36m
On his ninth birthday a boy receives many presents. Two of them first seem to be less important: an old cupboard from his brother and a little indian figure made of plastic from his best friend. But these two presents turn out to be much more magic than the rest (imdb)

This kid, who has roughly ten thousand extreme close ups of his face in 100 minutes, doesn’t get all his jollies torturing rats - so he brings his toys to life so he can torture them too

"There is No God here." - Little Bear / Actual comments on the movie: It could have been much better with different camera work and editing. Too many dramatic close ups (of the kid especially) and questionable acting. There are so many interesting directions you could go with this premise and most go unrealized. It hasn't aged particularly well either.

I really loved the book so I thought I'd like the movie. Instead I was a 9 year old pissed off that they'd changed everything except some references to a tiny Indian and a Cupboard.

Kiddie fantasy/adventure saga has an interesting premise and a capable cast (though Crouse and Jenkins aren’t asked to stretch much), but there’s a spark and fire missing that means the film never really comes to life despite everyone’s best efforts – once the set-up is done and we kick into Act 2, it comes to a screeching halt with some not-quite digressions on American Indian history that are worthy subject areas, but not in a movie with its head in the fantasy clouds.

This kid is a jerk. And so is his tiny friend. Everyone’s got a bad attitude, kind of whiny.

Actually quite sweet and enjoyable. But, Patrick and Omri (Stupid name) are so fucking irritating, and when Omri kicks the rat, what the hell. God, no offence to the actor, but Omri has such an annoying face, and these emotional scenes which are featured in the film are just ruined by close-ups of his stupid face. Apart from that, it is quite sweet, quite sad and decently fun. I genuinely recommend this if you fancy killing some time.

This is a clever concept and I suppose it is possible the novel is better. I can look past the bad acting and weird camerawork but what I can't look past is just how boring everything manages to be.

i guess oz tried his best to adapt the already-awkward book into something that could at least be marketed as "magical, fantastical..." but this is bad. the many close-ups of omri's face and two front teeth, why?

I have nice memories of reading the books with my dad and then we watched the movie together. I have too much emotional baggage attached to this movie to judge it fairly. I don't want to re-watch it as an adult as I am afraid it will suck and might ruin my memories.

I found The Indian in the Cupboard to be a cute, magical children's movie that adults can also enjoy. The acting from Hal Scardino was above-average for most child actors and brought a lot of emotion to the role.

We read this book back in the 3rd or 4th grade, a few years before the movie came out. I remember enjoying the book, but being disappointed by the film. While I am sure the book aged well, I am also convinced that the movie aged like milk. When left in a cupboard.

The movie magic on display on this story was good for the nineties, but I'm not sure how well it would hold up today. It's a nice little fantasy story that definitely caught my imagination as a kid. The movie itself is just a little bland I never found myself wanting to revisit it.
