Great story and Michael Shannon does an excellent job as usual. However I would have appreciated more background about how he ended up as a porn editor for gangsters, and also more details of how he planned each of his hits. The montage representing "and then he bumped off a lot of people" doesn't work; the director should have shown what he did and how he did it. This is particularly relevant because he got away with murder again and again.

Biopic about Richard Kuklinski, a hitman who worked for the New York mob for over 20 years, racking up a huge body count. Like several other films featuring Michael Shannon, he is the best thing floating in a sea of mediocrity. It's a perfectly serviceable mobster flick that hits all the right notes, but doesn't really do anything unexpected or interesting with the material. Shannon's performance is really the only thing to see here...oh, and David Schwimmer getting whacked by Robert Davi.

An engaging crime thriller that doesn't quite have the pay-off to be great. Other minor issues include secondary characters often being undefined and indistinguishable, and some of the editing and story structure is jarring, moving the story on in an uneasy jumpy fashion. Even so, Shannon is just brilliant, and Vromen has good style and lights the film with great atmosphere and skill. Has its issues, but certainly worth your time.

Saw @ TIFF. Michael Shannon was born for this role, as his menacing glare and towering figure really made the character believable. Not many current actors could balance the family man / hired killer the way Shannon did here - just an incredible job. The rest of the cast was also well portrayed as everyone had their role to play and none were poorly written. The interesting casting choice of David Schwimmer, with a ponytail and thick mustache, had everyone laughing every time he was on screen.

The parts end up being better than the whole but we're talking about a movie where Michael Shannon gets threatened by Ray Liotta after he's already menaced Robert Davi. The supporting cast is no less impressive but if you add any more bruisers to the mix and the graining itself might get too rough...if Powers Boothe had somehow shown up I assume it would've scratched my TV screen.

I love Michael Shannon. One of the best character actors out there. Being very interested in serial killers like the majority of North America, I had very high hopes for this picture. Shannon is splendid as Kuklinski, however; I found The Iceman to be boring. More than boring; unimaginative, flat and lifeless. The inverse of what and who the titular character was. A film ruined by poor pacing and character development. Shannon does shine however.

Michael Shannon turns an average gangster movie into an average gangster movie with an amazing lead performance. Never managed to draw me in emotionally and the brown color scheme gets tiring quick, but it's decent if at times uninspired viewin'.

Pacing issues aside - some sequences are a tad tedious, some overwhelmingly packed with action - this is a solid hitman movie, and Michael Shannon's lead performance is utterly mesmerising - alone, he makes the film worth a watch.

Shannon is great as usual. Franco’s character aged like milk. I first saw this years ago and somehow didn’t recognize Evans for most of the movie, granted long hair Chris Evans isn’t something I was expecting.

There's literally no reason for this to exist; if you really want to learn about Kuklinski, just watch the two HBO docs, which are far more chilling and fascinating, and from which a key moment is already used to bookend this film. Shannon's performance is simply indelible, but the rest of the film suffers from cliché, flat aesthetics, and resting on its laurels by way of look-at-all-the-stars-in-our-film -- there's David Schwimmer! (...Why?) Ray Liotta! Look, James Franco! Chris Evans! Ugh.

The cast does a good job here, especially Michael Shannon in the lead role. The script feels like it has been done before and it does not really break any new ground. Overall I would recommend this film.

crime genre is usually not that entertaining (unless it is ricchie's L S & 2 L B ...or involves some heists with funky OST ...or non-cliche bad cops) and this movie would not be an exclusion... if not for the cast i d probably ditch it... ( didnot recognized ryder...she was much hotter in 2k12 ;] ...schwimmer lol ...)

(Viewed in 2014): Films about career criminals have become increasingly tiresome, mostly because the writers and/or directors are committed to the flawed notion of 'realistic portrayals', which invariably leads to dullsvillle. They also tend to resemble TV movies shot on a low budget with no sense of style. The Iceman is no exception. It's a watchable but generic example of its genre, conforming to every predictable story beat and true crime cliche. Shannon's performance is strong but wasted.

This was a pretty routine crime drama, following a story arc and plot contrivences we have seen a thousand times. Wife doesn't now what he does for a living? Check! Lovely kids under threat? Check. It's all there, and if it wasn't for the brilliance of Shannon, this would have been a waste of time, particularly as the script leaves huge questions unanswered, like ... how did he get away with it?. Strangely cast, but Franco, Ryder and Liotta are all highly watchable. Enjoyable, but frustrating!

That they've altered stories the real guy has told -many times- to make him more sympathetic leaves a bad after-taste, that and the irksome sepia-or-something-effect aside it's a decent gangster -and a bit of paranoia- film.

As a portrait of the real Kuklinski, it takes a vicious, calculating sadist and makes him a loving but repressed family man with an anger problem who fell into the mob. Fortunately, it's very engrossing and enjoyable. Shannon's performance is full of power, angst and button-down savagery. It's refreshing to see Liotta being tough and intimidating again, Evans defies everything audiences expect of him, and Ryder and the two daughters create an effective emotional hub for the killer's humanity.

Michael Shannon is quickly becoming a favorite actor of mine. He's so skilled with the subtleties and yet he can still become explosive and altogether believable with both. This movie is really well done, I didn't imagine Chris Evans would surprise me but lo and behold, he did a great job. I was pretty transfixed while watching this drama unfold, It's well worth your time.

Kuklinski is a harrowing, yet fascinating man. As far as my knowledge of him goes, Shannon portrayed him brilliantly and the story is mostly accurate with the only changes being those to add a bit more structure so we don't just watch random scenes from this dudes life. My biggest complaint was the music, sometimes making it feel more murder fantasy and less biopic, sometimes just being plain out of place. Watch, the two HBO interviews with Kuklinski.

Sometimes the overly dark content is a bit too much to handle, but overall it's a great portrayal of a fittingly dark character. The acting is top notch from everybody; the story is well developed and delivered. I'd have liked to see more about his traumatic past to better understand his actions, but I guess they gave enough to get the point across.

The movie is a hard look at cold emotionless sociopath and killer. We are outsider's looking into Kuklinski life, but not into his thoughts. He's like a wild animal, unpredictable except in his violent reactions. Kukinski loved his family and the rest of the world was his prey. While some might see this lack of insight into Kuklinski as a flaw, I enjoyed it. Was surprised by how much I liked this movie, it's not my normal fare.

Michael Shannon gives off the performance of his career, but it never quiet develops past a typical Mafia movie. There is no stand out plot device, and no real substance beyond Shannon's menacing and stone cold performance. The unfortunate part is the performance seems wasted a film that had unlimited potential. It was rather lacklustre and boring to put it plainly. It had all the right pieces, a true story, a sick cast but it fell into the hands of the wrong director and that proved costly.

This was good. Not great, but good. Michael Shannon is an acting genius. I was hooked by his performance. Some of the film drags on but a lot of it is tense as hell and gripping. I also love to see an incredible true story. I found myself saying "he should kill that guy next!". Does that make me a bad person? Ryder has a softer side and Ray Liotta is as jerk-like as ever. The ways they killed people were very interesting. I wonder if that killer sneeze really works?

Shannon was perfect compared to the rest of the film, which sort of squandered amazing source material, the early parts of his life are a bit too intense to be put on film, I imagine...but this could have a been a truly great crime movie. Instead, it's a pretty standard one - not bad, just...good.

What really gets me about this film is that it's so intense but with not a lot of high powered action. If you're looking for a car chase you'll get one but not the way you expect and you won't find anyone fighting on top of a train, I feel like that's better reserved for Bond anyway.

Apparently the film is based on facts. He was bi-polar, paranoid, a serial killer (before he started working as a hit man), beaten by his parents (one of his siblings was killed by them) and he tortured animals as a child. All of that leads me to believe that he wasn't the gentle, loving father that's portrayed which is also the movie's phoney hook. Shannon was well cast, for the first time IMHO.
