Saw at a premier event with an introduction from Jason Blum, Damon Lindelof, Glenn Howerton, and Betty Gilpin. The Hunt manages to be genuinely surprisingly throughout the first half in terms who lives and dies. The film pulls a neat trick with a revolving gallery of red herring protagonists before settling into a rhythm and getting a bit lost in the unfocused/scattershot political commentary. The level of outrage is, of course, stupidly overblown.

"The Hunt" is an equal opportunity satire, poking fun of all sides at once, but it does so by turning the characters into caricatures. The only person here with any depth is Gilpin, which is unsurprising since she's the lead. Even if you find the satire unsuccessful, or distasteful, then there's still the blood and guts, if that strikes your fancy.

Watch the Hollywood Elite poke fun at themselves (while still shitting on Conservatives) even when they are trying to be subversive. I recommend it regardless because it's fun. It's a throwback to 80's style action and there's a great final boss fight between two hot chicks (#girlpower) with a few surprises along the way as well. A mash up of Kill Bill and The Hunger Games. Also, I didn't know Emma Roberts was in this.....oh....never mind.

This would've been better if it was more consistent. The Hunt does pull a few surprises actually, and I found myself intrigued throughout. However, too often does it derives from overblown political topic to another, without much correlation that isn't directly dropped on your head. It feels dumb downed a bit, and with its progression and arch, it just feels a little messy. I don't think this was that controversial that it deserved a delay. Anyways, it's a decent one time watch.

Was it better than that slasher where the guy is wearing a Ronald Reagan mask? Yes. Yes, it was. Was it as biting as Election? I'm not sure I'd go that far. Was it a superior take on The Most Dangerous Game? Well, it doesn't have Gary Busey like Surviving the Game, or Wilford Brimley like Hard Target, or John Leguizamo like The Pest, or a werewolf like The Beast Must Die, or a title like Slave Girls From Infinity and Beyond, or porn like The Suckers, but it's up there.

The cinematic equivalent of the emo kid from high school that constantly babbles about how everybody is horrible in their own way. Betty Gilpin is pretty good but for the most part, the characters and groups are too weakly-defined to have any kind of bite on a satirical level. For the audience that knows what this is going for and is pre-disposed to like that messaging, it will work, and I was entertained on an over-the-top survival fantasy level, but I was far from politically impacted.

Beats Rian Johnson and Edgar Wright's lauded last half-decades in humour, social criticism, and manipulation of genre mechanics. Went in knowing nothing and was impressed by the skill and commitment of the rug-pulling, and the quality of the comment: our present communication apparatus has confused our communication, deepened our divisions, and generally made us all crazier. And can you imagine Johnson or Wright staking so much on your understanding of Orwell?

A glut of satires about the predatory rich seems to have arisen of late, itself obviously symptomatic, and so it took a while for this viewer to overcome the feeling that this was going to be just another unfunny and unsubtle exploitation of resentment and discontent. Perhaps it was that resistance that made it seem that this gets better as it goes along, but, in any case, it turns out to be quite an entertaining dose of mockery aimed at various forms of contemporary craziness and stupidity.

I thought the first half was fantastic because it was interesting following all the people trying to figure out what’s happening. The second half felt more formulaic but still fun. I was able to overlook how heavy handed the political stuff was especially since it was a bunch of extreme caricatures. Also, I was happy to see Ethan Suplee.

the satire of the US right and left here is just their view of eachother. deep state neolibs vs salt of the earth racists. protag is kinda positioned as the centrist, or maybe just libertarian, but really shes just the one character who knows guns. the highlight is of course the protag betty gilpin making a funny face at arrow girl before stabbing her. seriously great scene. also oh shit, ike barenholtz from mad tv!

I enjoyed it quite a bit, mostly for Gilpin who delivers one of the most entertaining performances I've seen in a long time. I'm not so sure the movie makes any political statement successfully, but I never felt insulted or downright laughed at. It pokes fun at a lot of things in American culture but not out of poor taste. The length, pacing, and premise are all very interesting and I never once got bored. Not a great film, but it's very entertaining and doesn't deserve the controversy.

Most orig & memorable aspect has NO politics at all: it's the shifts in 1st 30min (Emma R's best film). Gilpin was great. Film was unpredictable for most of it. Action was exciting. Fun time. Re: the commentary--I think it does set the libs up to be the bad guys a little more than the conservs but a lot of the outrage in society is on the extremes... so to blast the extreme left is fine. The left isn't immune. But it does try to criticize both sides and for the most part it does it well. It's a movie with limited time, it can't go super in-depth in that time frame without becoming a documentary.

Decent political satire with a plot similar to Hunger Games meets Ready or Not. Decent start, mediocre middle, strong finish. It’s also more amusing than it is funny. Gilpin and Swank are pretty enjoyable as highlights of the film. Overall it’s a decent film that will be polarizing, but Ready or Not is a superior film that should be seen first.

Entertaining, but so much wasted potential. It wants to criticize both ideologies, but it's mostly very VERY tame on the satire part. But the action is ok and fun, some of the jokes are funny ("No more glass!") and the lead actresses are really good. Betty Gilpin is a total surprise as a bad ass, and Hilary Swank is such a good actress, when she has a good role.

So I'm a Lindelof defender. I love Prometheus and Watchmen But uh, this sucked. The political satire is not clever beyond "Trump voters are redneck conspiracy theorists, and Liberal elites are hypocrites who care too much about being PC". It's 14yo Family Guy shit. If you've read the premise to this movie you've pretty much seen the movie. It makes stabs at a deeper message - "People become the monsters we imagine them to be" but I doubt there is much insight anyone will get from this.

Under Quarantine Film Review #6: What an incredibly heavy-handed "satire", could they not go 5 minutes without beating us over the head with the incessant politics? I understand that both sides were supposed to be an over-the-top caricature of the left & right but my god it just made the characters just dumb & boring, except Betty Gilpin, she was really cool. Although it started off strong, it was nowhere near as clever as it thought it was.

It’s Gilpin’s film and without her it would fall apart. A lazy piece of satire it undoubtedly is (but then the US political landscape may be well beyond parody or satire at this point), but the basic set up is fine enough to just about string-along attention from one death to the next.

Its odd. It is presented in such a way that you have zero clue what to believe or who anyone truly is for that matter. You can some of the dialogue as either completely cringe or funny but neither has the desired effect. Why? Because its overly satirical and way too high strung to even be a concept worth considering. Alas it does exist and this movie was something I made it through.

Numbing, heavy-handed mess is a satire without bite and an action film without thrills; relying on the most simplistic and basic left vs right talking points, writers Lindelof and Cuse loudly bludgeon their audience with variations of the same tired commentary ad nauseum (to its marginal credit, neither side emerges the victor). Swank continues to cement her reputation as having the most bizarre career for a double Oscar winner, while Gilpin picks a couple of amusing moments from the mess. Ergh.

There is a final boss fight that is worth the preceding 70 minutes, which are mildly entertaining as well. A genre-throwback is always up my alley, even one that isn't great. The subversiveness of this is far less than one would have thought listening to the rhetoric at that time. I certainly appreciate the freedom taken to off any character at any time.

Though this movie's release was controversial and a little untimely, I still very much so enjoyed it. Betty Gilpin plays the lead role of Crystal, and she plays the hell out of it. I will say, without Gilpin, this movie probably wouldn't of been NEARLY as good. She made this movie. Swank is also pretty good as the antagonist. I really love how this movie doesn't really lean to far left or right and pokes fun at both sides. That being said, I don't think this is for everyone. Not too bad tho!

The satire in The Hunt is decent. The "deplorables" on the right are essentially murdered by the overwhelming force that they usually support. While the "elite" on the left, who are just as deplorable but with an illusion of moral superiority, go out in the exact same way. Relatively famous actors being killed off after 5 minutes of screen-time each make the film enjoyable and help keep a quick pace. Gilpin is good, but her character suffers too much as a plot device and the ending flounders.

Wow, so this is a film that can easily upset people who won't understand the message... and it's easy TO misunderstand the message, especially because of its dark, political satire humor. This was not worth all of the controversy. It's a competent action film, but the political messaging is phoned in and muddled. But I can say that Betty Gilpin is amazing, as usual, and the plot tends to zag where you expect it to zig. I'm all for skewing fake woke neoliberals and conspiracy theory conservatives, but this lacked bite. A passable 90-min flick with an intriguing if not particularly original premise. Nothing special but does enough to hold your attention for the most part. In fact it’s the final one-on-one act with Swank where you start to lose interest - the political commentary is a bit muddled, and probably should have been left out altogether rather than cranking it up toward the climax.

The beginning (the misleading of the protagonists, if you will) is very well done, but I didn't really care for the lead. Unsure if it was the actress, character, or script or a combination of the three. I also think it might have been better if it was a straighter story with less political commentary. I don't mind political commentary, but it seems very muddled in what it's trying to say here and becomes a distraction. Not terrible, but severely flawed.
