The imagery is absolutely stunning, the things Jodorowsky can do are impressive indeed. If nothing else, this is a great movie to just soak in the visuals. But he's just throwing together of bunch of rather obvious juxtapositions and symbols, without having that much to say about any of them. It definitely comes off like a screenplay a college student would write during a particularly intense acid trip.

For all the film's gonzo humor, Jodorowsky attempts to pull off something deathly (...) serious: allow the spectator, if s/he is so willing, to be swept up in a personal alchemical journey and create their own Philosopher's Stone - an elevation of their spiritual state. Symbolism can be a helluva drug, and some trips don't let you return the same person.

Visually compelling and bursting with imagination, and absolutely full of mad ideas. I really liked it (I tend to enjoy this insane hallucinatory, surreal sort of thing), even if the ending felt a bit underwhelming. I'd love to take some acid and try and watch this...probably wouldn't be the same again.

I don't really know how to explain The Holy Mountain in terms of how I liked it because I have no idea what I liked I just know that I liked it. It's chalk-full of bizarre sacrilegious imagery that is preposterous but also mesmerizing. The Holy Mountain is one of the most vivid, disturbing films I've ever come across but even in the most uncomfortable scenes I wanted to keep watching. It's incredibly imaginative and stunning from start to finish.

While irritatingly on the nose, the film's major themes and ideas appealed to my personal sensibilities far more than a film of this sort has any right to. Call it a soft spot for the confrontational and thought-provoking. As impressive as it is exhausting, however, the fruit of Jodorowsky's insane vision will undoubtedly remain an acquired taste, but there's plenty to chew on here.

Here is a fun drinking game. Drink everytime: 1) when someone is naked, 2) when there is a weird liquid and 3) when a new animal species is shown on screen. ...and then you die! With amazing spiritual images and a cool soundtrack, this drug fueled ride down the road of human insanity/deprevaty/spirituality is a powerful experience. Especially if you are wasted because you playing the drinking game above.

Visually as vibrant & creative as anything, it successfully parodies the New Age mysticism it also revels in. Jodorowsky has a unique eye for both surreal beauty & audacious pop-aesthetics. Thoroughly baked with sardonic yet somehow cordial illumination that transforms everything you bring to it.

Truly unique. Easily the closest film I've seen to depict an intense drug induced hallucination; the sets and music are out of this world. The ending was absolute rubbish though, it's a shame René Daumal never finished Mount Analogue for that would have saved us from Jodorwosky's horrible improvisation.

Okay, so here's something really out of the ordinary. It's not quite as accomplished as El Topo, but still there's enough strange imagery here to make this the ultimate acidtrip movie. Fun fact: This movie was shot in black and white, but it's so psychedelic, the human brain can only perceive it in color.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie so not straight forward! I got the gist of it. It's a beautifully made film and something that's truly hard to describe. I initially had mixed feelings throughout the film, but I'm sure I was suppose to. It's exceptionally well directed and put together, but I will need to see it again someday to fully take everything in. Only real problem I had was the tedious pacing at times.

This movie has no cohesive plot and I was unable to follow it at all, the symbolism is pointless, albeit sometimes breathtaking. This movie would be better off as a combination of shorts. Just because it sounds like a good idea when your stoned doesn't mean it is a good idea, the simple fact that George Harrison and John Lennon endorsed and sponsored this film is a testament to that.

With Jodorowsky you are going to get psychedelic bullshit mixed with animal violence and explicit human sexuality that often delves into the vulgar. If you're OK with experiencing that kind of stuff in a way that's presented with incredible imagery and cinematography, with an intense soundtrack and scenes that will make you laugh and then feel guilty about it, this is a masterpiece. Definitely a movie made for watching late at night while in a certain adventurous state of mind.

Not my favorite Jodorowsky's film, the low budget design and music are very appealing and imaginative, but the plot is too confusing to be enjoyable, don't get me wrong I quite like my fair dose of surrealism but this was too confusing to follow almost with no purpose except to shock which I was, a couple of times during the film.

Some symbolism is obvious and immature which is something I didn't expect to say about a Jodorowsky movie. Every bit as trippy and bizarre as it is often claimed to be and you can also add to that humorous and visually brilliantly composed. The first half hour, despite making me a bit squeamish, is the best bit as we follow one guy on an aimless and mostly wordless journey through all sorts of bonkers brilliance. The introduction of more characters, more dialogue and a goal for the characters to work towards all got in the way of me fully enjoying the hallucinatory madness.

Quite possibly the most unhinged movie I have ever seen. It's a lot of nonsense surrounded by random animals, bountiful nudity, and some D-tier Monty Python esque skits. Some of the humor works, and the rest doesn't. It's an incredible production that goes nowhere, a true gold turd. I saw this and Gremlins 2 on the same day. I prefer Gremlins 2. Even though this movie birthed this line into existence, "Rub your clitoris against the mountain, give yourself to the world." And she sure does.

I had high hopes for this as I love Santa Sangre, which I saw years ago, but as I watched I found myself rolling my eyes more and more. The sheer artistry and craft is impressive, but I felt that unlike Santa Sangre, which used the surreal to supplement the story, this one seems more surreal for the sake of surreal. It's almost as though they said "You know what would make this scene weirder? A hippo." and then got a hippo without thinking about whether having a hippo there would do anything.

However I wasn’t able to enjoy it on a purely subconscious level like with El Topo because often the symbology was just too blunt (and not very good) which was a little distracting. Music was excellent. Potentially a hot take, but there were perhaps too many naked people.

I've just watched it, so I might change my opinion. I feel a strong impulse to compare this to 2001, maybe because of the heavy use of symbolism. In Kubrick, symbolic meaning is built gradually, and I find it satisfying in the end. Whether you like it or not, The Holy Mountain is a film that ultimately tears apart the symbolic fabric that it has built. It cannibalizes itself. Somehow it all feels rather thin by the end.

Flying in the face of any attempt at criticism, this cascade of images feels like MONTY PYTHON as directed by Ken Russell and is never short of riveting, even as the sometimes self indulgent grotesquerie becomes difficult to watch. Performers seem to be less acting than surrendering to Jodorowsky's madness; the ultimate lack of form or meaning also unfortunately results in a lack of genuine resonance, but it is still an entertaining (and even darkly amusing) experience.

If I could give it two scores I would give it a 100 and a 60. It's all over the place but bursting with ideas. The ending is as brilliant as it is lazy. It's the best and worst elements of psychedelic indulgence. What can't be denied is this film looks amazing and has a ton of strong visuals. Don't expect a cohesive narrative. At best there are repeated themes that get repeated.

the crazy world we live in. Except for the amount of dead animals - I really liked this one. Towards the end I was waiting for - "and now, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and hopefully spark some sort of controversy" ;)

Perhaps my favorite opening and ending scene in any film ever. Jodorowsky's tarotic vignettes are so surprising and entertaining and I don't know why that is, possibly it's shedding the notion that films that are even slightly opaque are derided as pretentious. Whatever. This is a playful, silly movie that surprises me continually, no matter how often I've seen it.
