Until this, I'd considered his role as Virgil Earp in "Tombstone" as his best performance in his now 47 year career in movies. And as best I can tell, this is his first leading role in all that time. Maybe it's the writing, or directing or inherent ability, I don't know, but he hits his stride with this role and never looks back. I flat out can't think of another actor who could have pulled off playing the 72 year old male lead (his actual age) vs the the very striking 37 year old Laura Pre

A Hollywood story about a aging western star coming to terms with dying. Wonderful job by Sam Elliott in what feels like minimal movie with the heart in the right place.

Renowned character actor Elliott's most substantive role to date is unfortunately squandered in a barely believable, awkwardly executed meditation on ageing and social relevance, with some 'trendy' social media segues which assures the movie will date very very quickly! Worth watching for Elliott devotees, but he is arguably miscast here, and his charisma with Prepon as his younger lover almost non-existent. A great shame - Elliott deserves better.

It's not exactly original, but it is worth watching for Sam Elliott if nothing else. However everything else ticks along nicely enough. The love interest angle is a little forced and there are a couple of unintentionally awkward scenes but aside from that this is an engaging and unpretentious character study that should work well as long as you don't go into it expecting a masterpiece. It's easy going and unassuming, and sometimes that's just fine.

This is probably going to go down as one of the most forgettable films I have ever seen. Though Sam Elliott is good, nothing else, not a single thing stands out. Direction is average, the music is barely noticeable, the supporting cast is average at best and not playing on their strengths. And its pretty boring. A rough hour and half.
