Remember all the subtly and restraint of the original "The Haunting"(1963), well the remake says forget that, throws away any ambiguity, and cranks the ghost nonsense up to eleven. Honestly this film is a guilty pleasure of mine. While in no way is it frightening or suspenseful, luckily where it fails at being spooky, it ends up being pretty darn goofy. With the right mindset, this ridiculous over-the-top CGI ghost schlockfest, makes for a fun unintentional comedy.

This is just what we needed. Taking an excellent, psychological horror film and remaking it into a whimsical CGI fest, in a manner that almost makes it seem like a family film. But that's fine, cause you know, "it's about family". Best of all, they had the courtesy to edit out all that pesky quality from the original version.

That was entertainingly bad, but not *as* entertaining as I expected. The writing keeps trying to be low-key - starting off as low-key family drama and moving into low-key creepiness basically up until the big climax. This doesn't work for multiple reasons, but especially because the set design and special effects are dedicated to being as gaudy and over-the-top as humanly possible. (I do appreciate that the polyamorous bisexual was a good person, but I'm not sure that was a conscious decision.)

Lol, okay, this was obviously ridiculous, but it was kind of entertaining right? I had a good time, I swear, and I mean, it looked pretty enough. The acting wasn't bad, really. It had a campy charm, c'mon you guys. What do you expect??

For a cast of solid actors (including Liam fucking Neeson), this film really fucking blows. Lili Taylor does not play a convincing character, and she's certainly not likeable in this movie. Zeta-Jones is sexy, and Owen Wilson is a caricature. The film doesn't really surprise, the special effects suck, and the ending is predictably retarded. Compare this to the earlier film, which is pretty decent, and this thing is a fucking travesty.

Expensive and full of ineffective special effects that become increasingly more stupid and unbelievable as the movie progresses. Some good acting, and a few nice effects. But, it becomes tedious and boring. They took every special effect too far. These story tellers have completely lost the art of telling a story that a person can become invested in. Instead of engaging the audience, they simply bombard you with ever increasing amounts of nonsense.

There were a bunch of CGI haunted house scenes with no suspense. In the late 90's early '00 they were churning out a bunch of these polished horror movies that were just full of CGI with bad acting.

Why would insomniacs have been thought to be particularly good subjects for the study of fear? Where's the correlation? This later version has been thoroughly de-psychologized -- and, an important distinction, de-psychicized -- and it substitutes a heart-tugging rescue of the perfectly harmless ghosts of 19th-century child laborers from the malevolent ghost of a sweatshop Scrooge. It stands entirely on its own. Or rather, it falls.

I will admit this movie frightened me when I was 12, but not so much when I'm 22. Some cool scenes and it builds up fairly well, but it builds up to one of the most retarded endings I've seen in a horror movie, and I even thought so when I was 12.

Congrats to everyone who worked in the art departments for making this mess look so eye candy, but this is evidently way inferior to both 1963 and Flanagan's versions -- Jan de Bont just not suited for horror. But hey, Owen Wilson's head is chopped, underrated Lili Taylor must've grabbed some cash and Z-Jones poses as the most 2020s character of any 1999 film -- non-monogamic, alleged artist saying nobody gets any good sleep because life is so frenzy these days. Also: this needed more Dern.

The house in The Haunting had intriguing character that kept me interested for most of the runtime. Almost all of the attempts to be scary made me laugh, I don't think that was the intended response. For example, in one scene, Nell walks up to a suspicious-looking door, as she approaches, the door turns into a giant metal hand and grabs her. To me, I would have preferred more be left to the imagination with the traditional rattling and creepy music.

Absolutely no tension, horror or subtlety whatsoever. So lacking confidence in its own ability to deliver as a remake, it shoehorns a predictable mystery narrative that makes zero sense. And the CGI spectacle makes the whole thing look like a children's theme park ride. What in the name of Casper's decapitated mother were they thinking?

The Haunting was not a good movie. The premise of the movie is dumb. A researcher sets up an experiment wherein the subjects believe they are taking part in a sleep study but he really wants to show how susceptible groups of people are to fear. Neeson is the researcher and he is not as prominent as the other characters. Lili Taylor is the main character and she is the best part of this movie. You can see how good of an actress she is here. Wilson tries to be charming and Zeta-Jones is sultry.

The big budget horror, a product of a bygone era. This starts promising. The cast is game and meshes well, but it doesn't take long at all for it to squander its characters and premise in favour of cheap scares with CGI that has aged like milk. It's an ultimately frustrating watch.

I admit it. Some days, I just really like watching a bad movie. This is one of those days. I watched this many many years ago and somehow, some of the visuals remained in my head, so I rewatched it, and, what can I say? I still like it as one of those good bad movies. It kinda feels like one of those "scary" rides in a theme park, made for 10-year-olds. Made me feel a bit nostalgic.

For some unknown reason, I enjoy this movie. Maybe it's Liam Neeson slumming it. Maybe it's Owen Wilson's hammy performance. Maybe it's the ridiculously over-the-top set designs. Maybe it's the convoluted, non-sensical story. Or maybe it's just the fact that the movie seems to know that it's ludicrous and revels in that fact.

Dammit, why would you do this to a book that had already been successfully adapted into a very good movie? Throwing every big name actor you can think of at a movie doesn't make it suck any less. There are some interesting things going on here, but ultimately, the set-up is so weak that the pay-off feels empty no matter what. With a group of four leads, there aren't enough characters to be slowly picked off one-by-one, which makes a massive delay between when the action should begin, and when the movie can afford to let it happen. The movie spends too much time spinning its wheels, which is odd because a lot of the story seems rushed to get to the scares. Trouble is, there are no scares.
