The Hatchet Man is uncharacteristically respectful of the Chinese for the time, in that there are no silly voices or exaggerated caricatures, but it's also laughably inaccurate in depicting their customs and culture. The film's an interesting curio for sure, but the acting and story are nothing special and it's disappointingly devoid of any kind of action.

Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young as chinamen?! The make-up is done very well. You can barely tell it's Young, but there is not much you can do with Robinson's ugly mug. Also Leslie Fenton made a very convincing sleazy Asian. The movie was at times a little too slow, but besides that it was a intriguing little story and quite enjoyable. Robinson is cool no matter what character he plays and as assassin Wong Low Get it's no different. And the ending..... the ending was a touch of brilliance!

This film didn't age well, and it comes across as racist and silly.

Well made, but the exploration of Chinese-American culture rings false and hollow.
