Pretty decent character-driven Western. Cooper makes for an interestingly ambiguous lead character and the story, while rather slow-moving, has a few melancholy moments that I appreciated. The finale has some decent tension and sense of unease as well, though the movie as a whole is not that memorable. Fun to see George C. Scott already dominate the screen in his first feature film performance.

The movie spends far too much time in Schell's initial recovery instead of building character conflicts. Schell's English is pretty bad but at least they acknowledge it. The gem of this film is its revealing of small town gossip and jealousy culminating in a lynch mob, playing out in similar fashion throughout US history. The song was nice but too contemporary. Fav scene: the whole town excited and marching the streets celebrating the GLORY HOLE! Yes I'm that juvenile.

This is a very different Western and it does just enough to make it worth watching. George C. Scott has a small part, but he steals every scene he plays.

Clearly a deeply under-appreciated Western. Cooper is magnificent as the enigmatic doctor and absolutely commands the whole film. That doesn't take anything away from the admirable support cast. Daves direction is crisp and the whole film has a great classic feel about it whilst actually also feeling quite modern. Quality Sunday afternoon viewing.

No real surprises. The Ted McCord photography is pretty, Malden and Schell are great as usual, and the Delmer Daves movie itself is just alright, with a dab of character complexity but otherwise kinda stagey.

Malden is such a nosehole
