Turns out you don't need to care about the protagonists to find a horror film effective. This is NOT a good movie by any measure, but this evil Japanese spirit shit just scares the hell out of me for some reason. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Top badass moment? Learning that slaying vampires is not a skill that's readily transferrable to other ungodly creatures. So all in all it's a bit of a dead-end career wise. On hearing Buffy mumbling a few words of what I suspect is really badly mangled Japanese, a pissed-off, long-haired hippy-goth make a nuisance of itself by dropping litter everywhere and giving Buffy exactly the ‘first day at my new job’ no one wants to have. 1 cat (black and really angry), no chainsaws or decapitations.

This story could possibly be filmed in a way to make a good movie, however this director is entirely awful. Every single time the action starts to get good the idiot cuts away. Why even try to tell a scary story if you are going to ruin every single scary scene. By the end all I wanted to do was scream foul. I hope I never again see another movie made by this crappy director.

This is an awful movie that makes you laugh. So as an unintentional comedy it's at least a 70, but as a horror movie it fails miserably. The cat kid is hilarious, not scary. The various sounds in this movie are the same way. Ahhhhhhhhh, or whatever the fuck it is.

A lot of twitchy ghosts and zoom-ins on eyes opened wide. However, in the nearly 20 years since I last saw this, the surveillance video scene stuck with me. That's pretty good, I think.

This is...fine. I'm not a massive fan of the original, & while this certainly isn't any worse it's no better either. Gellar is a solid lead, but she doesn't get enough screen time to make you care about her character- which leads into the bigger problem of the way the whole thing is structured. It's interesting & different on paper, but really it just derails the momentum of the story & keeps it stuck in first gear for 85 of its 95 minutes. All said, as basic a 2000's horror as you can find.

Interesting spin on haunted house tropes undermines its tension by telling its story in an irritatingly fractured way - it therefore becomes difficult to fully engage with the sinister goings-on. Gellar delivers an adequate if light-weight performance (it's all the material really requires); Zabriskie as always needs to do very little to be a chilling, unsettling presence. Never really tops its quite shocking opener and delays too long telling us what its relevance is to the rest of the film.

You're caring for a random non-japanese family in Japan, and find a japanese boy trapped in a closet that's been taped shut. What do you do next? Well, you'd call your supervisor of course, and then do nothing. Call the police? That's stupid. The film is a remake in the truest sense, copying most of what the same director did before and having little originality this time around, making this film mostly pointless and a boring retread. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

The Grudge is a decent horror movie. No more no less. The disjointed style of telling the story however makes it a hard movie to wholly recommend. Apart from the scary visuals there is nothing much else to stick around for here. Watch Ju-On for the idea fully realised.

A film where I felt genuinely creeped out at the end of it. Some of the scenes were really tense, and what I liked about it was that it did not rely only on jumpscares(few); there is a lot of tension-building and gruesome scenes involved here. I think that the cinematography did matched really well with the sounds used to create these scenes. However, there were also some scenes that were not so scary, and seemed pointless. Acting was OK, character development was not important in the film.

The Grudge is an American remake of the hit Japanese horror movie Ju-On, which was also directed by Takashi Shimizu. The English title doesn't quite capture the Japanese original, though--a case of a concept not translating easily across languages. A native Japanese speaker told me that ju-on carries the connotation of a deep-seated rage embodied through a curse involving the ghost of a murder victim. Apparently, The Curse of the Vengeful, Hate-Filled Ghost wouldn't fit on movie marquees here.

Saw this in 7th or 8th grade in theaters. Was absolutely the most terrifying movie I've seen to date. Watched it again at home, and it had lost some impact. Still, the suspense and horror builds from very early on and doesn't let you go until the closing credits. I remember waiting for one scene to calm down a little; nope. By the finale of the movie I was downright traumatized. lol. Would recommend if you want a scary movie; turn out the lights, don't take your attention off it, and enjoy.

The Grudge failed because it wasn't all that scary. Horror movies often don't make much sense, but if they frighten you, you don't question them in the moment. My mind wandered while I was watching this one -- to the point where all I could think about was how much fun I could have doing something else. The non-linear storytelling doesn't help much, the characters are largely all idiots, and, like I said, I wasn't scared. As a result, I didn't have much fun.

"The Grudge" had decent effects, a pretty good jump-factor and original 'monsters'. But the scares themselves were almost nonexistant. The plot was... well it wasn't a plot. If you're looking for just a few jumps and a laugh or two at actors and actresses trying to act scared then this is the movie for you. But the monsters did a good job of making the movie somewhat decent. The plot was nothing, there was no real writing, the way it was directed sucked and the actor casting was poor in some a

Surprisingly enough, "The Grudge" actually manages to rise above it's Japanese source material "Ju-On" by having a coherent plot and a few scares and chills here and there. Sure, it's not a good film by any stretch of the imagination but unlike its Japanese counterpart, this film didn't make me angry and want to destroy the disc afterwards (although admittedly I have only seen the Japanese remake and not the direct-to-video original or the Katasumi and 4444444444 shorts).

Don't expect to see anything new if you're already familiar with the original, because bar a few minor changes, this is virtually a scene-by-scene remake. It feels a little tighter in terms of editing, with fewer confusing flashbacks, and there's a little more development of the back-story, but it still relies far too heavily on cheap shocks (some of the imagery is a little more in-your-face, some of it is laughably cheesy). Overall, fairly pointless.

Decent use of flashbacks to introduce the backstory, but the handful of clever scenes couldn't redeem the bulk of the film. Every haunted-house movie is a spoiler for this one (including itself as it uses the same devices incessantly). I can only conclude that it was designed to surprise people with poor memories.

Should have been left as a Japanese movie. Much of the imagery that was taken from the original holds no meaning to the American culture, so many aspects are lost. A remake of a Japanese film, _Ju-On: The Grudge_, which was not much good to begin with. Perhaps, there, a better-than-usual rationale for a remake, especially because the same man occupies the director's chair: a second chance to get it right. If the game-playing is slicker the second time around, that's precisely what's wanted when you're pulling a series of fast ones. The means are still modest, and the frights honest.

This movie did creep me out somewhat, and horror movies get to me when the reason everyone is being killed (or whatever the hell happened to them in this movie) is such a simple reason like they stepped into a house and for that they're doomed, same thing with The Ring. It's the fact you can be hunted down for doing something so inconsequential that really got me, but this is still not that good of a movie.
