Attempts the old orphan-boy-becomes-a-man epic, but creates mainly a long bore. There are all these emotional cliches applied, but none of the characters truly won me over, even if Charles Coburn overaly-bearded face almost did. The type of evergreen story that ether wins you over or won't.

As someone else said, it's a little bit of Good-bye Mr. Chips and Oliver Twist, but more forgettable than both. Not bad at all though. A fine cast. Scottish & Irish Catholics especially should like it.
