This loose adaptation of an Edgar Wallace story finds Michael Bellamy (Kenne Duncan in his Kenneth Duncan period) inheriting Garr Castle, but his brother, Abel Bellamy (James Craven, as usual making Oil-Can Harry look smooth), has him imprisoned unjustly and moves into the castle himself. (imdb)

This 15 episode serial based on an Edgar Wallace novel (very very very loosely based) is a lot of fun if you can swallow a ton of patent absurdities. The real identity of the Green Archer is painfully easy to guess (yeah, you already know who it is), but naturally we don't find out until the final episode. Spike Holland is areal man of adventure ... getting into tons of fist fights and escaping certain death every episode ... which seems wildly uncharacteristic for an insurance investigator.

15 chapters to the story of The Green Archer (1940) was too much. Sometimes it felt like they just repeated the script from previous episodes to get by. Loosely based on the writings of Edgar Wallace, the script didn't do it any favours. It just got corny. But of course that's one of the reasons to love serials, the cheesy stuff drives it forward along with the exaggerated action they fill each 20-min part with. And there was a lot of that here.
