Vincent Price as Ratigan is the only memorable part of this otherwise fairly generic movie.

There's something immensely charming in this film's nostalgic, dated atmosphere: the cartoonish villainy and strong character design; the hand-drawn, ink-and-paint animation; the rampant smoking and drinking (and a burlesque dance!) in a Disney kids' flick. They really DON'T make movies like this anymore, and that gives it a unique status as a snapshot of a bygone era.

Love it. Its everything I love about Sherlock Holmes and mysteries and Vincent Price all rolled into one. I think this is a SEVERELY under rated movie.

With a story that's more unique than most Disney films, The Great Mouse Detective is a terrifically fun film. The Sherlock Holmes style characters are charming, and the story is equally so. Really good!

However, Katzenberg and the new management desired a more contemporary song as they would help make the film more marketable.[2] Michael Jackson was considered by Eisner to voice a character who would enter the saloon, confront Basil,[24] and sing a song at the tavern, but the suggestion was met with uncomfortable silence for which Eisner withdrew the idea Wanna see that fucked up Thriller mouse

Just fine. Very straightforward. Failing to resist the temptation, one might even call it it elementary.

At the very least different from most Disney fare, it still didn't do that much for me apart from the last 20 minutes or so but it's a pretty solid animated film nonetheless. Takes a bit too many short cuts both in story and production value but the voice acting is at least good. Not brilliant, but alright. Calling it a classic is quite a stretch.

(2014-15 Disneython #20:) Pretty awesome, and has aged well. The rube goldberg death machine at the end was legit scary as a kid, as was Ratigan going "full rat" during the clock tower chase/battle. It nails the rainy, gaslight lamp-lit Victorian London atmosphere of Sherlock Holmes about as well as a movie about talking cartoon mice fathomably can.

A childhood favorite that still holds up for me. There's a nostalgic element to be sure, but it's well-animated and very funny. Plus I dig detective stories.

Rewatch: Ratigan is one of my favorite animated villains. It's a fun take on Sherlock Holmes, but doesn't do anything amazing. They should do a Disney+ series of Basil and Dawson.

This is really more Bond than Holmes: spectacular setpieces, narrow escapes, nations hanging in the balance. Basil's deductive work can't be followed by the audience; not the mark of a good detective story, though that's itself a gag. Seems rather sexist to give that one sexy mouse an entire song and then just drop her completely.

For this not being a heavy Disney "Musical", it still is a fun movie. I love Olivia the little Scottish girl mouse. She is adorable yet a real fighter and her accent makes your heart melt like butter on a cheese crumpet. Basil of Baker Street is a perfect Sherlock character and I loved Dawson as the Watson character. I also loved that the mice lived in the same house as Sherlock Holmes. Rattigan is an excellent bad guy voiced by Vincent Price. Lots of smoking and booze for a kids film. Oh Disney

The Great Mouse Detective was released before Disney's next golden era. But despite that, it's quite strong. The main character and villain work off of each other perfectly, and both have great voice acting.

I see why this is a C-list Disney film. The first half is very, very dull. It picks up after Olivia gets kidnapped, but it's still pretty mediocre. I enjoyed Vincent Price a lot - I can tell he had a ton of fun with the part. Found the overuse of Damsels in Distress very tiresome. And all the references to Sherlock Holmes just made me wish I was watching the real one. Also, Disney, stop trying to make me like mice. It ain't gonna happen.

Honestly this movie was a little dull. Great animation and voice work make up for some of its faults but the story was a bit too generic for my liking. It was also lacking the sheer charm and knock you on your ass sentimentality that most animated movies use to cover up a lackluster story. Though I must give it credit for trying.

Not sure how much of the rating is the nostalgia talking, but this was a good portent of Disney's future. Also, because I watched at such a young age, it's the standard by which I subconsciously judge every Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

Undoubtedly a good movie, but I feel like a few decisions in the direction were a little weird. They could have made it a direct adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes story, but with animal characters, but instead it's just about a mouse detective who happens to live right under Holmes' home and has a life that 99% parallels Holmes' life. I think it could have been better if they'd gone a route similar to what they did with Robin Hood.

Basil displays the same sort of mental prodigies as his upstairs neighbor, Sherlock Holmes, but has a much greater tendency to land himself in tight spots. These, as it happens, are the movie's best moments, e.g., the climactic battle inside and on the face of Big Ben. The drawing of the characters, unfortunately, is in Disney's most insipid style, and Ratigan (with voice by Price) is too comically hammed-up to take a spot among Disney's better (i.e., more frightening) villains.

There's nothing at all innovative about the script or plotting, which renders the usually meticulously detailed series of elements of a typical Holmes mystery into a simpler Disney version for children. This is to be expected, but beyond the lack of subtlety in its writing there is an accomplished visual treat that entertains and delights after a different fashion.

While a bit dark and scary for a Disney kid's movie, the Great Mouse Detective captures the Sherlock feel it was going for and has the perfect mixture of mystery, suspense, and fun. It's actually surprising in a way that Disney never attempted to cash in and release a theatrical sequel to this beloved Disney classic.

When the young mouse Olivia (Susanne Pollatschek) sees her toymaker father, Hiram (Alan Young), abducted by a peg-legged bat, she runs to find famous mouse detective Basil of Baker Street (Barrie Ingham). Basil takes the case and soon finds out that the rodent toymaker was kidnapped by the evil Professor Ratigan (Vincent Price), who wants to use the toymaker's skills in a fiendish plot to replace the Queen of England with a robotic clone that he can control.

Apart from Sherlock, there are many other strong influences on display here. Victorian London is animated with style reminiscent of noir and classic horror, and there are even a couple of surrealist set pieces in a spooky toy shop and within the mechanisms of Big Ben. Vincent Price is an inspired casting choice, flavoring his performance with exaggerated notes of Lugosi. There are also a few moments of much-appreciated dark humor.
