Spectacular and supremely entertaining. Funny, tense, exciting, gripping. What really amazes me about this movie is the way Leone uses the frame so masterfully. Three amazing characters, dialogue that sparkles, and an endless supply of gripping scenarios that keeps the balance of power constantly shifting. Beautifully composed frames and Morricone's unforgettable score. One of the most enjoyable times you can possibly have with a movie.

I was alone on first viewing and when the final frame struck, I jumped out of my chair and stalked around with gaping grin, spluttering. With no-one to hear me extoll the score/the silence, the close-ups/the landscapes, the barbs/the quips, the alliances/the deceptions, the stares/the standoffs; there was only one thing to do - whistle, endlessly.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is everything a movie should be. It's entertaining, it's funny, it's action packed, well acted, has a great score, has really impressive editing, and everything else is on such a high level that it's almost flawless. There really aren't many films that can go up against this one and be compared favorably. It's my pick for the best western ever made and it's almost my pick as the best foreign film ever made. I love this movie.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has a ton of things going for it. Visually, it's masterful: Leone's framing is always perfect, and he creates a west incomparable to those depicted in any other film. Morricone provides the best score ever, an operatic and wholly original collection of musical pieces. And Wallach and Van Cleef are fantastic. But Clint Eastwood is the main attraction; no actor ever had more screen presence, and the walk, talk, and deadly accuracy create a character larger than life.

This is so good that the impressive Civil War battles are the worst part. I wish there was more Lee Van Cleef, "Where's the Cleef?". Leone in a few short years has MASTERED his craft. Morricone's score I won't even bother but I want you to know I kissed out this sentence on the keyboard. I've seen that final standoff countless times and each time my heart races (I'm not fat).

This movie took the Western (a genre frequently disparaged at the time) and elevated it to the level of myth, similar to what The Godfather did for mafia movies and The Lord of the Rings did for fantasy. A timeless masterpiece.

Utterly fantastic in every single way. Brimming with brilliance and expert skill from a master of the highest order, this film is the ultimate western.
The plot is simplistic in nature, and yet Leone draws out and crafts a film that featuers so many amazing scenes and moments that its hard to note all of them. And of course Morricone's score is divine, the work of a composing genius. If anything viewers should watch this movie to witness the best gunfight scene ever filmed.

Leone perfectly augments his arid desert vistas with a touch of surrealism. Everyone mentions how great Eastwood is but Eli Wallach is every bit as magnetic, and really this is Tuco's story more than it's Blondie's. Only the ugly wins, the white hat/black hat coding is an empty gesture, 'good' and 'bad' may as well refer to the characters' respective quick-draw accuracy. Not a fan of the 45-minute Civil War sidetrack leading to an awfully familiar bridge sabotage, but the last scene saves it.

The epitome of the genre, primarily due to Leone's fantastic direction, the great characters portrayed by Eastwood, Van Cleef and Wallach and the unusual, surreal and ironic brand of humour provided during the whole trilogy in general. While there is little in the way of great speeches and Leone's methods of direction might have been sometimes a little unorthodox, you can't argue with the way the film has been put together. Or over that iconic theme tune which now opitimises everything western.

There's much to be said about an Italian film which is effectively one of the Great American Pictures. The forging of a nation unglossed by the pretense of romanticism. These archetypal characters scour an arid pre-settled wasteland in the mercenary pursuit of wealth, unbothered by the principles of the formative war which engulfs them. So much cash at stake leaves no time to reconcile personal conviction with collateral damage. Blood money is requisite to realizing the American Dream.

My personal favorite of the "Dollars" trilogy, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is quite possibly the single most epic film ever. The build up to the final stand off will literally make your heart race. The ridiculously amazing score from Morricone, Eastwood at his finest, and Leone at the pinnacle of his career help make this one of the most classic pieces of cinema ever filmed. There is nothing that doesn't stand out in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Sergio Leone has more profound things to say about the core of the American spirit than many Americans do. Amidst an adventurous tale is the grievous reality of the Civil War that brings depth to the characters' personae, their morals not necessarily pure, but noble nonetheless.

One of the greatest payoffs in movie history. The storylines and characters all converge into the epic conclusion, along with the amazing chemistry they've built. The graveyard scene is one of the greatest scenes of all time. Morricone's score can't be overpraised either; a scene of people doing nothing for two minutes becomes unbearably intense with the pounding notes from the main theme.

Simply put: one of the greatest movies of all-time. The music, camera work and general badassery of Clint's "Man With No Name" are all so iconic and influential that it's almost impossible to judge the film objectively. The scale of this adventure is enormous and all the main characters are unforgettable. Interesting that one of the defining moments in American pop culture isn't even American-made, but Leone's vision is a brilliant exposition on the morals and motivations of the American man.

That being said, even if you're avoiding it because you "don't like westerns," give it a try. A bit long, but flawlessly delivered and with something for more or less everyone to find to love about it. Also, you haven't seen Badass until you've seen Clint Eastwood petting a kitten.

A masterpiece. Leone takes a stale genre and revitalizes it through the utilization of extreme close-ups, fantastic acting and Ennio Morricone's score, which may be the best of all time. The director's cut runs at precisely three hours in length; yet, the time just flies by as you're left mesmerized by the sheer brilliance unfolding before you on the screen. Leone takes an often maligned and abused genre to the greatest heights you can take film. The acting, direction, cinematography, writing, and score are all marvelous. You don't need complex plots or ideas to make a great film, and this showcases that perfectly, by being so supremely entertaining from start to finish that there's no need for anything more. The last half-hour of this film as an absolute revelation. Not just the famous standoff scene, but the scene where Tuco first discovers the cemetery. I rewound that 3-minute scene 3 or 4 times. Well now, I've just matured twenty years. Regrettably, I've never seen any of Clint's, or any other in this genre before. It's witty, humorous and very well directed, though that's seemingly credited to Leone. I lost interest half-way, when they were taken captive as prisoners of war. The film really came to a crawl or a dead stop at that point. I stopped watching for a while, went surfing online, until the bridge blew up and then finished from there. Sure the score is beyond iconic, but the film is just a bloated version of the lean, mean first 2 in the series. I'm not much of a Western fan, and so the 3 hour running time was just too much.

Brutal revision of Western imagery. There is no town to keep safe here; all is rickety wood, mud, blown sand. There is no good guy here, just ronin-like wanderers drifting in the substantial margins of this wild society. There is no heroic military past, just ragtag bands of dirty and dismembered soldiers in mismatching uniforms. A bit of a picaresque story in its structure, but held together by the maturity of Leone's vision, and by the incredible climax.

What I like is how fetishistically all of the characters treated their guns in this film. There's an ounce of truth to that, I felt. What I didn't like is how all their guns turned into magic. The amount of shooting ropes, shooting hats, shooting objects out of people's hands... I mean, it has to number in the dozens. At one point the dude needlessly shoots a canteen out of Eastwood's hand. YOU'RE JUST DOING THAT BECAUSE YOU'RE LAZY. YOU'RE GONNA HURT SOMEBODY. JUST SLAP IT OUT OF HIS HAND.

This excels in that it's brilliantly directed, and the screenplay is excellent (lots of decisive close-ups and beautiful ranged shots for contrasts etc). But it's the lack of obvious morality unlike most other Westerns, and the fact that we have to piece together each character to get a better picture of the whole ideal, where it really starts to excel. This is perfectly framed through three very different characters with a very similar goal.

Morricone's score, Eli Wallach's Tuco, Sergio Leone's direction, and, of course, Eastwood's Blondie are all in the cinematic pantheon. But on seeing the film in 2008 I really struggled with the disconnect between the Tex-Mex landscape and supporting cast and the emphasis on the American Civil War. After 40 years of hyper-realistic westerns and period Civil War pieces, I couldn't reconcile the major set piece battles with the fact that they were being fought by Spaniards in a western desert.

The Man with No Name is back in the final movie in the trilogy. I really love that these movies are connected but not connected at the same time. I love that the director chose to use actors from the previous movies in new parts. I understand that it can be confusing at times but there is also a level of common sense that the director expects of his audience that we would never get today. There are plenty of cool moments within the film, but at nearly 3 hours long, this epitome of the western genre goes on for far too long. A treasure hunt, an almost comedic tale of flip-flopping revenge, and a well-executed theme on the futility of the civil war aren't enough to justify the runtime. Wallach's the Ugly gets the most development & personality; Eastwood's the Good's sole the virtue is being blonde, and Cleef's the Bad is mysterious & underused. Phenomenal score, horrendous dubbing.

There is bare 2 hours worth of material here yet the film closes in on 3 hours. The plot for the film doesn't come into play until an hour in. I know that we need to get to know the characters, but when they are as flat and as they are here, there isn't a need for that long of an introduction.

This is Sergio Leone's masterpiece. It has humour, drama, outstanding dialogues and tension. Don't forget about the characters: the good (Clint Eastwood), the bad (Lee Van Cleef), and the ugly (Eli Wallach as Tuco). The editing, the cinematography, and one of the greatest score of all time. And the thrilling final duel at the cemetery when the Ecstasy of gold begins through to the Circle of death is one of the best scene in film history. Absolute brilliant! One of the best films I've ever seen.

I'm not even gonna lie it took me like half the movie to figure out Tuco was "the ugly" because they just stuck a two-second shot of him at the very beginning

The first twenty minutes are good and the final thirty minutes are great. The entire second act should just be tossed into the trash.
